Air quality studies underway in Fort Mill surrounding Silfab Solar, nearby schools

FORT MILL, S.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) -- With a new school year and new school filled, parents are not backing down.

"Coexistence with a hazard is not safety. What is needed now is not baseline data collection, but moral clarity," said John Lee during Wednesday night's Fort Mill School Board meeting.

With school back in session, parents are intensifying their calls for their district to move students out of campuses near the Silfab Solar plant. They believe the facility is harmful to the environment and to the young school children who attend classes a few hundred feet away.

District leaders are launching two environmental studies to ease public concerns.

"The first one is a periodic sampling, which happens at a specific moment in time. There are 24-hour testing periods at multiple sites, both indoor and outdoor at the school," said Fort Mill School Communications Director.

Burke says the first baseline sampling was taken before students returned to classes. The next one will be completed in the next few weeks while the students are in school.

Testing will take place throughout the year, before the Silfab facility begins operations.

"The other piece of the air quality monitoring is what they call continuous monitoring. And their recommendation on that is that we have equipment installed in two locations along the fence line of our property and the Silfab property," he said.

If readings come back abnormal, the contractor running the study will request an investigation and notify administrators of issues needing immediate action. Burke says the district is also working on emergency preparedness plans with first responders.

One parent asked the district for more transparency during the school board's monthly meeting.

"Parents have been begging for almost a year to have direct two-way dialogue with this district. The consultant negotiated a $15,000 allowance for community engagement, which includes a publicly accessible community forum. I was very disappointed to hear that the consultant with the support of this district planned to prioritize speaking to a 55+ community before engaging parents," Langford said.

Burke assured that the district is planning a forum to be announced soon.

"We are awaiting to get data so that we can actually provide information on both the baseline testing as well as where we're at with the MOU agreements for emergency management," he said.
