Jaylon Johnson Clears the Air About His Summertime Absence

One of the players I was looking forward to seeing the most this summer was Jaylon Johnson.

And soon, the time will come for Johnson to make it onto the playing field. This excites me. Because even when the Chicago Bears have struggled, you could always count on Johnson putting the clamps on opposing receivers to give the team a fighting chance. Watching Jaylon operate against an opponent’s top wideout is one of those game-within-the-game things I enjoy following. Should he play in Week 1, his matchups against Minnesota Vikings star receiver Justin Jefferson will be appointment television. But before we get there, Jaylon Johnson was able to successfully clear a significant hurdle — making it onto the practice field at Halas Hall.

This is what it looked like (via Matt Zahn of CBS Chicago):

Jaylon Johnson is the Chicago Bears’ top cornerback. Once Jaylon makes his 2025 debut, Ben Johnson will become the fourth different head coach he has played for since being selected by the Bears in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft. The University of Utah product is coming off a second consecutive Pro Bowl appearance and earned second-team All-Pro honors last year. But more than that, Johnson is the type of player whose confidence is infectious in a way that you would hope would rub off on his teammates.

Unfortunately, a “freak accident” during an offseason workout resulted in a groin injury that put him on the non-football injury list at the start of training camp. Not only that, but the injury also caused him to miss the entire preseason. So to see him back in action, even in a practice setting, is good news.

Jaylon Johnson’s summertime absence was not about his contract

The timing of Jaylon Johnson’s injury was awful. Because not only did it keep him off the field with his teammates, but it also opened up a narrative about his absence being fueled by a contract dispute. Johnson missing time due to the injury came shortly after an interview with WWE superstar (and Bears fanatic) Seth “Freakin'” Rollins on Rich Eisen’s show, in which the Bears cornerback playfully hinted that conversations regarding his contract might need to come up soon:

“Just really seeing a lot of the other corners getting paid, I almost feel like we need to have another discussion coming up here soon. The market is moving. As long as I keep being myself and keep playing at a high level there definitely are going to be some more conversations coming up soon and really keep it long term.“

I saw the quote above was taken out of context more times than I care to admit. But it was definitely one of those things you had to be in on the interview to understand the context. With that being said, I digress because Jaylon Johnson cleared the air about his situation this week as he and his teammates gear up for their Week 1 matchup against the Minnesota Vikings on Monday Night Football.

“You know me better than that,” Johnson said, via Pro Football Talk. “I never held out. I’ve never done any of that stuff. For the media, it’s a good play as far as the contract and the timing and things, but I’m not that type of cat.”

In the end, I’m glad to see that Jaylon Johnson was able to clear the air so we can move on and turn our focus to the season ahead.
