Chicago Bears head coach Ben Johnson and quarterback Caleb Williams are looking forward to deploying a new-look offense Monday against the Vikings.
Johnson, the former Detroit Lions offensive coordinator who took the Bears job knowing he would be tasked with unlocking Williams’ potential, is putting the finishing touches on his gameplan for Monday’s season opener against the Minnesota Vikings.
He says his relationship with Williams has continued to blossom, and that he’s ready to ride out any issues as his offense takes shape before his head coaching debut.
“We’re going to grow together,” he said. “This offense is going to grow together with him. And, you know, there’ll be some bumpy steps along the way, but that’s okay. I feel really good about where he’s at right now.”
Williams set a host of Bears records in his rookie season, throwing for 3,541 yards and 20 touchdowns while completing 62.5% of his passes.
Still, the Bears are hoping for a lot more out of their second-year quarterback this year, investing heavily in their offensive line and in their skill position players as they hope to give Johnson’s offense maximum chances to succeed.
Williams said he has “utmost confidence” in Johnson to put him in a position to succeed, and is up for the challenge against one of the NFL’s most aggressive defenses.
“I got the utmost confidence in Ben, and his coaching ability, play calling and all of that,” he said. “So I think it comes down to being able to execute exactly what he puts out there for us as a team, as an offense.”
Johnson and Williams both are looking for ways to throw the Vikings off-balance, as the Brian Flores-led defense is the most blitz heavy in the NFL. One of the biggest keys will be keeping Minnesota off-balance by varying the speed with which the Bears call and execute plays, something the team worked hard on during the preseason.
“It’s a weapon that we’re going to use, as is the cadence, the motions, the shifts,” Johnson said. “I think in this day and age in football, it’s a huge advantage for the offense when you can we can use that to attack the defense. (Caleb’s) done a nice job being able to digest that. And we’re trying to find that right balancing act for a young player that’s still learning some new concepts.”
Williams threw three touchdown passes against the Vikings last season, completing 50-of-80 throws for a combined 531 yards while throwing zero interceptions. He was sacked five times in the two games, both of which were Bears losses.
Still, the second-year quarterback is excited for the challenge, both in executing a fast-paced offense and in gaining yards in every way possible.
“It’s getting harder (for opponents) to decipher what and when the ball is going to be snapped,” he said. “Being able to use (tempo) as a weapon is really important, for us and our team and getting those, kind of things, we call it ‘dirty yards,’….. is huge and important for us as an offense.”
