After a nearly 2-decade reign atop the college football mountain, Alabama could be morphing back into mediocrity and understandably its boosters are livid. While head coach Kalen DeBoer has a steep $70 million buyout, you have to dispel logic when it comes to the rabid Roll Tiders.
Amidst a report of the unrest from the boosters, DeBoer is aiming for some damage control after the humiliating 31-17 loss against then-unranked Florida State. Alabama dropped from No. 8 to No. 21 after the stunning defeat.
“My message is, I think we’ve got a good football team that can do big things still this year,” DeBoer said. “We’ve got to prove it and we’ve got to go do it.”
When asked if he’d heard concerns from the boosters, DeBoer replied: “To this point, it’s just been me being able to focus on football. I appreciate that.”
The 50-year-old DeBoer is in the unenviable position of replacing the legendary Nick Saban, who guided Alabama to 6 national titles in his 17 seasons in Tuscaloosa. DeBoer went 9-4 last year in his first season at Alabama but the standard is national championship contender or bust for fans.
Alabama will try to get back on the right path when it hosts UL Monroe on Saturday in its home opener (7:45 p.m. ET/SEC Network). Alabama is 2-1 in the all-time series vs. UL Monroe.
