Dealer’s choice: are you happier that the Cubs now have a 4.0-game lead over the Padres for the top Wild Card spot … or that the Cubs have cut the NL Central deficit to 5.0 games? For me, it’s still the former, but if that latter number were to get down to a 3.0 by mid-September, I might start dreaming dreams again. Huge props to the pitching staff for last night’s win, with Shōta Imanaga throwing the quality start, and then each of Drew Pomeranz, Caleb Thielbar, and Daniel Palencia throwing a scoreless frame to preserve the one-run lead. The Cubs were probably a little limited in in their pitching options last night after a long road trip and then a ten-inning game the day before, so it was all the more important that the pitching played out the way it did. This play from Dansby Swanson was outrageously good, and I feel like we’ve seen a bit of an uptick in his defensive flash over the last month:Dansby Swanson there’s no way! He’s got 8 DRS this year pic.twitter.com/j7RVZAG5mR
Ryker Colon, a 10-year-old from Muscatine, has been handing out blue bracelets to Cubs players to help raise awareness for his rare disease. Many have jumped at the chance to wear them including star shortstop Dansby Swanson. t.co/OBTRlnogwr
— Tommy Birch (@TommyBirch) September 1, 2025 Relief weapon coming later this month? Michael Soroka (shoulder) is up to 34 pitches in live BP and was in the mid-90s:#Cubs Michael Soroka threw a 34 pitch live BP today. He checked out healthy and his velocity was back up into the mid-90s. It had dipped in the weeks leading up to the injury.
— Taylor McGregor (@Taylor_McGregor) September 2, 2025 You have to figure if he’s already at 34 pitches in live BP and mid-90s, then he’s probably pretty close to going out on a rehab assignment. Soroka, by the way, changed his number from 41 to 99 to accommodate new Cub, Carlos Santana. © David Banks-Imagn Images I forgot to mention earlier – and you probably noticed – that Ha-Seong Kim is now on the Braves. They claimed him off of waivers from the Rays in an unusual move, with the Rays just looking to unload salary and de-risk Kim picking up his $16 million player option for next year. Clearly, the Braves would be happy to have him at that price tag if he decides to return. Angel Cepeda remains scorching hot, with another huge game last night, including this massive shot:No. 8 for #8 !! pic.twitter.com/5hD96yZZYP
— Myrtle Beach Pelicans (@Pelicanbaseball) September 3, 2025 I could pick any number of cut-off points to say that Cepeda is hot, but how about going all the way back to July 31: .350/.382/.538/169 wRC+. I don’t love that the BABIP is near .500 during that stretch (with only so-so walk, strikeout, and ISO rates), but if you’re hitting the ball hard constantly, you’re going to have a really high BABIP. And that’s not bad! For a 19-year-old at Low-A, you can hold out plenty of hope that the strikeouts will come down, the selectivity will go up, and the lift will go up. I’m still very much in on Cepeda as a top-15 prospect in the Cubs’ system. Currently, he’s playing about half of his time at shortstop, and half split between third and second.
