Trisha Yearwood Reveals One of Her Songs Is Actually About Her Big Pet Peeve

After releasing her new album, The Mirror, in July, Trisha Yearwood is opening up about the meaning behind one of her new songs.

Since The Mirror is Yearwood's first experience writing her own songs, she was inspired by her own life, making her newest tracks some of her most personal yet. And in a video that the country legend shared on her official TikTok account, she explained the story behind her song "Little Lady" about the expectations that women need to settle down as soon as they get married.

As it turns out, "Little Lady" actually ended up being about one of Yearwood's biggest pet peeves, but she didn't realize how much she couldn't stand the idea of women fading into the background after marriage until she started writing the song, especially while looking back on her engagement to husband Garth Brooks in 2005.

"I was telling the story about how when Garth and I first got engaged, people would be like, 'Oh, let me see the ring.' And I get that. I mean, that's the tradition. That's what everybody wants to do, is see the ring," she said.

She didn't mind showing off her bling, but she did mind the comments people would make afterwards.

"And when people would say — and I know they were meaning well — but they would just look at the ring and they'd go, 'Oh, you did good.' Like, you don't have to work anymore, like you can now rest," she said. "When somebody would say, 'You did good,' I always took it like, 'Does that mean that you think this was all — it was this prize that I was working toward, and now I can retire?'"

For the record, even though the song is very much inspired by Trisha's real life, there is no Pam — well, there is, but that's not her real name. "All the names have been changed to protect the guilty," Yearwood said.

The Mirror is Trisha Yearwood's Songwriting Debut

It's hard to believe that after a career like hers, this album is Yearwood's first stab at songwriting, but it is — and it was an important milestone for her, as she told Billboard in July.

“Most of the really great things that have happened me in my career were not planned,” she said. “It was really something that clicked a couple of years ago. I started writing and it was really kind of therapeutic and really evolved naturally out of something I felt like I needed to do and I’m so happy with how it came out.”

There's no doubt anyone would see Yearwood as a "little lady" with all she's accomplished — both before her wedding to Brooks and after.
