That was about 19% below league average by ERA-, and his peripherals generally matched. Last year, as a swing-man with Milwaukee, Ross was a bit better than league average, for what that’s worth. Before that, he was something of a man in the wilderness, trying to work his way back to the big leagues and through various injuries for several years.
I would not anticipate Ross contributing to the big league Cubs this year absent an urgent need. But, of course, that’s why you sign a guy like Ross when you have the chance: because you never know when an urgent need might appear, and Ross could be better than whatever other options you had available on that given day.

That is to say, for a player to be eligible for a team’s postseason roster, he must have been in the organization by September 1 at 11am ET. It’s highly unlikely that Ross would ever make the Cubs’ playoff roster, mind you, but, like I said, it’s a just-in-case situation.
