Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker will hold a news conference Tuesday addressing reports that federal troops could deploy in Chicago.
The news conference comes as threats from President Donald Trump to send the National Guard to the city to address crime continue. It also comes a day after a “Workers over Billionaires” rally and protest near the Haymarket Memorial Monday, where Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson led the crowd in chanting “no federal troops in the city of Chicago.”
Pritzker’s update, scheduled for 3 p.m., will stream in the player above and on NBC Chicago and Telemundo Chicago once it begins.
According to the White House, President Trump is also scheduled to speak Tuesday. A senior White House official told NBC News the announcement, scheduled for 1 p.m. CT, will be focused on defense.
Two federal law enforcement officials told NBC News that Immigration Customs Enforcement, Border Patrol and other federal agencies plan to scale up arrests of undocumented immigrations in Chicago beginning this week.
It wasn’t immediately clear if that includes the National Guard.
Over the weekend, Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem confirmed the plans for a stepped-up federal presence in Chicago, with the DHS requesting limited logistical support from officials at the Naval Station Great Lakes to support the agency’s anticipated operations. The military installation, in Lake County, is about 35 miles north of Chicago.
“We’ve already had ongoing operations with ICE in Chicago… but we do intend to add more resources to those operations,” Noem said during an appearance CBS News’ ”Face the Nation.”
Pritzker also spoke on “Face the Nation,” saying no one in the Trump Administration has called his office about coordination.
“Any kind of troops on the streets of an American city don’t belong unless there’s an insurrection, unless there is truly an emergency and there’s not,” Prtizker said.
In anticipation of increased enforcement efforts, Johnson last week signed an executive order, declaring Chicago police will not collaborate with military on police patrols or civil immigration enforcement.
“We have received credible reports that we have days, not weeks, before our city sees some type of militarized activity by the federal government. It is unclear at this time what that will look like exactly.”
The order also utilizes legal action and legislation to prevent attempts to violate citizens’ rights, Johnson said.
On Monday, Chicago’s Fraternal Order of Police posted on social media saying, “Until we have more cops, some federal help is welcome.”
Federal help in the form of troops has its costs, according to former general with the Illinois National Guard and former Democratic Congressman from Illinois, Ret. Maj. Gen. William Enyart.
“Every dollar that’s spent on sending the national guardsman to Washington, D.C., or Chicago or anywhere else for that matter, is a dollar that can’t be used to pay for guardsmen to be mobilized to take an overseas deployment or to provide recovery efforts for hurricanes or fight floods in the Midwest,” Enyart said on MSNBC Monday.
Crime rose over the holiday weekend compared to last year; at least 54 people were shot, seven fatally, during Labor Day weekend this year. Last Labor Day weekend, at least 42 people were shot and 10 people killed, the Sun-Times reported.
However, overall violent crime in the city, including homicides, is down year over year, according to city data.
