NEW YORK — The state is awarding nearly $36 million to local law enforcement to help reduce gun-related shootings as numbers continue to decline.

Officials said shootings are down 19% through August in communities taking part in the Gun Involved Violence Elimination (GIVE) initiative. Western New York is receiving more than $9 million in new funding as part of this effort.
Rochester Mayor Malik Evans said the city is seeing key gun-related crime metrics falling by 20% to 68% below 10-year averages.
“Gun violence and violent crime continue to fall to levels not seen in more than a decade and outpace the national decline,” said Evans. “Our spirit of innovation and willingness to embrace new crime-reduction technologies and strategies have played an instrumental role in driving down violent crime rates over the past four-plus years.”
The statewide push has brought the number of shooting victims to the lowest level in two decades, since the state started tracking it, officials said.
