England’s Matt Wallace delivered an emotional interview ahead of Team Europe’s captain’s picks for the Ryder Cup on Monday.
Wallace finished second at the European Masters, meaning he might miss out as one of Luke Donald‘s selections for the 2025 edition of the Ryder Cup in September.
Team Europe are looking to defend their crown Stateside after brilliantly winning in 2023.
There are six players already confirmed in Rory McIlroy, Tyrrell Hatton, Robert MacIntyre, Tommy Fleetwood, Justin Rose and Rasmus Hojgaard.
There are still six spots available on the team.
Jon Rahm is a very strong contender to take one spot, Ludvig Aberg and Shane Lowry are also likely to be on the plane, leaving three slots that are up for grabs.
And after not winning the European Masters, Wallace faces another snub after cruelly missing out in 2018 as well.
The 35-year-old finished on 20 under par, but it wasn’t enough to win the tournament, and potentially end the Ryder Cup dream.
Speaking afterwards, he broke down in an interview, but he still managed to say the following: “I’d never give up on the Ryder Cup.
“I just won’t, so that’s it.”
It followed an earlier interview in the week in which he appeared to accept he wouldn’t be playing at this year’s Ryder Cup.
He said: “It’s been a hard couple of weeks, probably more emotionally than physically [with] wanting to show myself and try to get into the Ryder Cup team when it means so much to you.
“Pressure in golf is like a ghost. It is there, you can’t see it, but you can sense it. It really affects your swing sometimes.
“You give it everything, and I just haven’t had it.
“I won’t give up, there is an extra week. [But] I don’t believe I will be able to get a pick, but it is out of my control and my hands, so we will leave it up to Luke.”
Wallace has given it everything in the last yearGettyWho else could make it?
There are several players all still within a shout of making it into the Ryder Cup team.
However, there are going to be some nervy waits for a lot of people.
Many reports suggest that Viktor Hovland should be among those to be picked.
Sepp Straka has two PGA Tour wins this season, but his form lately has dipped, meaning he might just miss out.
Englishmen Aaron Rai and Harry Hall have performed well and will hope to make the cut.
Matt Fitzpatrick is another Englishman who will feel he has a chance of making it.
But the waiting will soon be over when Donald confirms his picks on Monday at 2pm UK time.
