Leeds United extended their unbeaten league run at Elland Road to 22 games – their best such streak since January 2010 – thanks to a 0-0 draw at home to Newcastle in the Premier League on Saturday.
Daniel Farke’s men managed to stifle their Champions League opposition, who were unable to field new signing Nick Woltemade and were again without the seemingly Liverpool-bound Alexander Isak.
Nevertheless, both teams might have ultimately been content with the point: Leeds for holding on to a draw against the team who finished fifth last term, and Newcastle for not losing at a typically hostile ground.
The stalemate did, however, end Newcastle’s run of eight successive league wins against promoted opponents.
While the average neutral may have expected a fiery contest between two competitive teams in the combustible atmosphere of Elland Road, in truth it was a largely uneventful and drab affair.
Both sides lacked quality in the final third – Newcastle’s new forward Woltemade watched from the stands and certainly won’t have had any worries about getting into the team based on what he was seeing.
It took Newcastle nearly 41 minutes to register a shot that wasn’t ultimately blocked, with Leeds just about the more threatening of the two sides.
Nevertheless, the only shot on target of the first period – just before the break – came via Newcastle’s Jacob Murphy.
As such, Leeds got to the interval having had seven shots with none on target; only once on record (since 2003-04) had they recorded more attempts in a Premier League first half without any being accurate (8 vs Tottenham in February 2022).
There was little sign of an improvement to proceedings after half-time. Neither team could truly take control and defences continuously came out on top.
Amid the lack of drama, former Newcastle midfielder Sean Longstaff did at least catch the eye. His five tackles and eight duels won were more than anyone else on the pitch, while he ranked joint second for interceptions (2) and fouls won (2) in a characteristically industrious display.
The game did become slightly more stretched in the latter stages, with Leeds looking potentially threatening on the break.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin forced a save in the 90th minute from Nick Pope, who also had to be alert to a few lofty deliveries.
But it was a game that warranted its 0-0 scoreline, the teams’ combined xG total of 1.01 being the second lowest for a single game since the start of last season.
It won’t last long in the memory of anyone.

Leeds vs Newcastle Stats: Post-Match Facts
This was Newcastle’s second 0-0 draw in the Premier League this season (also v Aston Villa on MD1) – more than they had in 2023-24 (0) and 2024-25 (1) combined. Leeds United are only the seventh side to see both of their first two home games of a Premier League season see no non-penalty goals, and first since Watford in 2015-16. Newcastle are only the fifth side to draw both of their opening two away games of a Premier League season 0-0, after Arsenal in 1998-99, Charlton in 1998-99, Liverpool in 2005-06, and West Ham in 2013-14. It’s only the second time the Magpies have ever seen their first two away games of any league season finish goalless, after 1901-02. Leeds United are the first newly promoted side to keep a clean sheet in both of their opening two home matches of a Premier League season since Huddersfield Town in 2017-18.Enjoy this?
