Veteran ESPN college football reporter announces surprising retirement

Veteran ESPN college football reporter Chris Low made the shocking announcement on Thursday that he’s leaving the network after nearly 22 years.

As a new college football season begins, Low is departing the scene, making the timing of his announcement even more surprising. Low accomplished many things and broke many stories during his more than 2 decades at the network, but he might be best known for breaking the news that Alabama legend Nick Saban was retiring from coaching in January 2024.

Low announced his departure from ESPN with a heartfelt message on his social media account.

“I begin with the most important words: Thank you,” wrote Low. ” … It’s been a marvelous run, and my gratitude runs deeply, to the fans, my ESPN colleagues, the coaches and players who allowed me to share their stories and most importantly my family who sacrificed while I was away chasing those stories.”

Low was hired as a reporter for ESPN.com in July 2007 and served as a senior writer covering college football, with a particular focus on the SEC. That focus and strong relationship with Saban eventually led to Low breaking the news of Saban’s retirement.

The Missouri native was raised in South Carolina before settling in Tennessee, so he’s had a part in a lot of SEC locales throughout his life.

Low also began his stellar journalism career in SEC country, as a student at Tennessee in the mid-1980s.

Four decades later, a reporter synonymous with college football started another college football season by saying goodbye to ESPN.
