The Chicago Bears made some roster moves on Thursday. They aren’t as big as the transaction the Green Bay Packers made earlier in the day. Whatever.
Chicago Bears Roster Moves — August 28, 2025
Let’s discuss the series of moves made by Bears General Manager Ryan Poles on Thursday afternoon:
We might as well rip the band-aid off at the top. Defensive end Austin Booker is going on injured reserve. Booker suffered a knee injury during the Bears’ Preseason Week 2 win against the Buffalo Bills and did not play in the exhibition finale against the Kansas City Chiefs. I held out hope that Booker could be back early in the season when Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson said his reserve defensive lineman would miss a few weeks. Unfortunately, a trip to IR will cause Booker to miss (at least) the first four games of the season.

After watching the Bears claim D’Marco Jackson off waivers, it makes sense that Jones was the odd man out after this roster move. With two spots on the 53-man roster being unused, the Bears brought back long snapper Scott Daly and wide receiver Devin Duvernay. I didn’t think either player would be gone from the squad for that long. But re-signing this quickly sank my theory that the team would try some roster shenanigans to keep those two around. The following players have been released from the practice squad: Long snapper Luke Elkin, defensive back Mekhi Garner. Call it a hunch, but I have a feeling we’ll be seeing those names again at some point down the line. These players are joining the practice squad: Tight end Nikola Kalinic — The Canadian-born Kalinic checks in at 6-4 and 248 pounds. He has spent time with the CFL’s Hamilton Tiger-Cats (2019-21), Indianapolis Colts (2022), Los Angeles Rams (2023-24), and Atlanta Falcons (2025) on a reserve/future deal before being waived earlier in August. Defensive back Dontae Manning — A five-star recruit who played at Oregon from 2021-24, the cornerback spent time with the Falcons after signing with Atlanta as a UDFA in April. Manning finished his career with two interceptions, but one of them came in a win against Penn State in the Big Ten Championship Game. Defensive back Gervarrius Owens — Owens was a seventh-round pick (254th overall by the New York Giants in 2023. After spending some time with the Giants and Tennessee Titans, Owens made his way to the Minnesota Vikings this past offseason. And while he didn’t make the cut in Minny, perhaps he can bring some info about his former team to his new squad.
