Night one of the 2026 U.S. National Championships is upon us, and there was only one scratch among the top eight senior and top eight junior swimmers for the first night of competition.
Luka Mijatovic was the top seed in the 18 & Under 100 freestyle final after he swam 49.19 in prelims to finish 18th overall, a little more than three tenths ahead of Jordan Ragland‘s 49.53 in 2nd place.
This swim was a new best for Mijatovic by about six tenths from the 49.80 he set in July of this year. He came into the year having never been under 50 seconds at 50.15 from the U.S. Open Championships in December.
Mijatovic is the top seed in the men’s 1500 freestyle final, which will be the final event of the session and is just after the men’s 100 free.
His scratch moves 40th-place Allen Gyang from Sandpipers of Nevada into the last 18 & Under spot with the 50.42 he swam in prelims.
