In a previous Instagram post she had revealed that she had suffered a sprained ankle and bursitis in the leadup to the Commonwealth Games. Bursitis is an inflammation of the bursa, small, fluid-filled sacs which cushion several joints around the body.
Okaro swam the 50 fly and 100 free this week, as well as leading off England’s women’s 4×100 free relay which won silver on day 1, before withdrawing from the 50 free yesterday. She had been the #3 seed after clocking a new lifetime best of 24.48 to win the Aquatics GB Championships in April.
Okaro had not looked quite at her best at these Games, posting a 54.50 leadoff on the women’s 4×100 free relay, 0.75 seconds off the 53.75 she swam in April to win the British title. She placed 8th in the women’s 50 fly in 26.57, then finished 9th in the semi-finals of the women’s 100 free in 55.14.
Despite her injuries, Okaro came away from this meet with her first senior long course international medal. She won silver on the women’s 4×100 medley relay at the World Short Course Championships in 2024, and won three medals including silver in the individual 50 free at the 2021 European Junior Championships.
Okaro has just finished up her freshman season at Texas, in which she placed 4th in the 50 free and 9th in the 100 free at the NCAA Championships in March. She carried that form over to long course as she set lifetime bests in the 50 free (24.48), 100 free (53.75), and 50 fly (25.95) at the Aquatics GB Championships, winning the British title in all three events.
Okaro would have been in the hunt for a medal in the women’s 50 free at both the Commonwealth Games and the European Championships, and her withdrawal removes one of Great Britain’s top sprinters for the latter. Theodora Taylor has established herself as a replacement with her performances this week, which have included two Welsh records in the 100 free (54.14, 54.00), and a 52.63 split on the mixed medley relay which won bronze.
