80s Icon David Byrne Makes Personal Admission About Olivia Rodrigo

David Byrne has only kind words for singer-songwriter Olivia Rodrigo.

The '80s singer recently sat down with Stereogum's Rachel Brown for the publication's "We've Got A File On You" series on Thursday to reflect on various moments throughout his 50-year career, including establishing his label Luaka Bop, his song "Angels" appearing in an 1994 episode of Beavis And Butt-Head, scoring a #1 dance hit with X-Press 2, writing "This Must Be the Place (Naive Melody)" and his brand new album Who Is The Sky?, out Sept. 5.

During the interview, Brown brought up Olivia Rodrigo, whom Byrne joined onstage during her Governors Ball performance in New York City this past June. The 22-year-old singer, who was one of the headliners at this year's festival, surprised the audience as the two performed "Burning Down the House," a hit from Byrne's days with the iconic band Talking Heads.

"When she reached out, I was like, 'Ok, are we gonna do some choreography or some movement? Do we have time?'" the singer recalled. "We had time to rehearse and figure stuff out. It was fun.”

Brown also asked the 73-year-old singer if he was familiar with Rodrigo's songs before agreeing to perform with her.

"Yeah, maybe not every single song, but I knew quite a few of them," Byrne replied.

When asked his favorite song, Byrne admitted that "obsessed" is his favorite, a track featured on the deluxe edition of Rodrigo’s sophomore album, GUTS.

"Maybe, 'Obsessed with your ex,'" he said, quoting the chorus. "It’s kind of real, but also very funny."

Byrne also admitted to Rolling Stonein his feature published two weeks ago that he watched one of Rodrigo's concerts while she was on her GUTS World Tour last year. He attended one of the Madison Square Garden concerts in April 2024.

"She’s a great performer, and she was having a really good time, you could tell," Byrne said. "I got introduced to her afterwards, and she seemed like a real person — someone who, growing up in the world that she did, survived it really well."

When Talking Heads was formed by Byrne, Chris Frantz, Tina Weymouth and Jerry Harrison in 1975, the group was known for their blend of punk, pop and rock, as well as their hits including "Psycho Killer" and "Burning Down the House." Their unique style and performances helped push the boundaries of rock and pop, influencing many musicians and shaping the sound of their generation. Beyond Talking Heads, which disbanded in 1991, Byrne still has a strong solo career, where he has released multiple solo studio albums, composed film scores and collaborated with many artists across different genres.

Next week, the singer will release his ninth solo studio album, Who Is The Sky?, his first since 2018’s American Utopia. The album is set to drop on September 5.
