They will be joined by the top four teams from Cricket World Cup League 2 and four teams coming through the World Cup Qualifier Playoff.
The World Cup Qualifier Playoff will feature eight teams. These include the bottom four teams from League 2 and the top four teams from the Challenge League. The ICC is yet to announce the format of this playoff, but only four teams will qualify for the main World Cup qualifier.
The Challenge League will have 12 teams, divided into two groups of six. Every team will play three round-robin tournaments, and the top two teams from each group will move into the Qualifier Playoff. The West Indies’ situation seems not safe presently at the rankings.
West Indies face huge qualification scare
The two-time World Cup champions are currently 10th in the ICC ODI rankings and are in danger of missing direct qualification. West Indies have only two ODI matches left before the September 30 cut-off, both against India. Their chances also depend on the ODI series between Afghanistan and Ireland.
If Ireland beats Afghanistan 4-1 or 5-0 and the West Indies wins both matches against India, the Caribbean side could move into the top eight. But if Afghanistan win the upcoming Ireland series, West Indies will almost certainly have to play the World Cup Qualifier.
The West Indies would be hoping not to face the 2023 fate. In the last edition, they failed to reach the ODI World Cup after losing to the Netherlands in a Super Over during the Qualifier in Harare. This time, they must be hoping to avoid this situation.
