CHERAW, S.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) -- The Chief of the Cheraw Police Department is speaking out after a mistake allowed a loaded handgun inside the Chesterfield County Detention Center.
In a public message, Chief Julius K. Riley admitted that his officers failed to properly search a suspect before transferring him to jail.
The suspect, Zykemeon Nimir Davis of Dillon, S.C., was arrested by Cheraw Police on August 20 for shoplifting and resisting arrest. Days later, during routine cell searches on August 23, detention officers discovered a loaded Walther P22 handgun in Davis’ possession.
"After a thorough investigation of the arrest, transport, and intake processing of this prisoner, it has been determined that there had been a breach in our procedures," Chief Riley shared. "It is with regret to tell you that our officers failed to properly search the inmate."
Riley confirmed that two department policies were violated during the process and promised strong disciplinary action.
"I am extremely troubled and saddened by our failure," he wrote. "I would like to apologize to Sheriff Streater, the officers of the Chesterfield County Sheriff's Office, and the officers of the Chesterfield County Detention Center. I can only thank the almighty God that none were harmed due to this failure."
No additional charges are expected for others in connection with the gun, but three other inmates were charged for possessing contraband tobacco.
This incident comes days after a detention officer was charged for allegedly showing an inappropriate image of himself to an inmate.
