Star Trek Icon William Shatner Sends Inspiring Message to LGBTQ+ Fans

As Star Trek's legendary Captain Kirk, William Shatner has touched the lives of countless viewers, so it was especially meaningful when the 94-year-old shared a very important message for his LGBTQ+ fans in particular at a recent event.

During an appearance at this month's Star Trek Las Vegas convention, Shatner was asked by reporter Dawn Ennis from The Washington Blade what message he had for "queer Trek fans" — and his response was characteristically iconic.

    “Keep on queerin’!” Shatner said.

William Shatner shares message of support to LGBTQ+ Star Trek fans. When asked by a reporter about the queer fans in attendance, the 94-year-old actor smiled and said "Keep on queerin’.” Known for his role as Captain James T. Kirk, Shatner spoke to fans at the Star Trek Las Vegas (STLV) convention. “We all belong to each other, and all of us belong to the rest of existence, the world, the universe,” Shatner said. “We are linked chemically and electronically with the word ‘quantum’ attached to it. ‘Quantum’ is the study of the small particles called atoms. We should all never forget the awesomeness, the incredible forces that we have no idea about that work everywhere in the universe. It also suggests that we are caretakers of our earth and we must, without question, care for the water, the air, the earth.” #williamshatner #startrek #jamestkirk #captainkirk #lgbtqia

During the same appearance, Shatner shared his thoughts on the very nature of our existence as humans.

"We all belong to each other, and all of us belong to the rest of existence, the world, the universe,” he said. “We are linked chemically and electronically with the word ‘quantum’ attached to it. ‘Quantum’ is the study of the small particles called atoms. We should all never forget the awesomeness, the incredible forces that we have no idea about that work everywhere in the universe. It also suggests that we are caretakers of our earth and we must, without question, care for the water, the air, the earth.”

The STLV event also featured other Star Trek actors discussing LGBTQ+ representation in the franchise, including Celia Rose Gooding, who plays Uhura on Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.

“As a queer person, I would love to see more of it,” said Gooding. “I can neither confirm nor deny what we’re going to get because we haven’t seen a single script yet. But I think for so many reasons, it’s important for marginalized group to see themselves in the future.”

William Shatner Has Always Supported His Fans

For his part, Shatner has also spoken out in support of his LGBTQ+ fans in the past. During a 2023 interview with Watermark Out News, Shatner shared another message, saying, "whatever your sexual orientation, it’s your business, it’s what you do."

"It’s what you’re feeling. If you were born in one body and feel identification with another, that’s your business," Shatner continued. "You’re not harming me, I’m not harming you, live your life. You only have — I want to tell you, from the point of view of my age — you have one shot at it, and to make yourself miserable, unhappy, unuseful, is outrageous. Live your life. You just have a few moments."

As Trekkies everywhere know, Shatner's advice could be condensed into one phrase: "Live long and prosper."
