You may have seen a headline making its rounds last night, revealing that the Cardinals attendance for their Monday night matchup against the Pirates was the lowest in the history of Busch Stadium III, and the first time they’ve sold fewer than 20,000 tickets. You didn’t misread that. And yes, you are allowed to enjoy it.
Cardinals Attendance Drop
Indeed, this post from Derrick Goold (St. Louis-Post Dispatch) gave me great pleasure, as I’m sure it will for you.
#Cardinals announce a tickets sold crowd of 17,675 tonight. That is the smallest in Busch Stadium III history, and it is the first time they’ve sold fewer than 20,000. #stlcards pic.twitter.com/iA2Cv2WSth
— Derrick Goold (@dgoold) August 26, 2025But it got me thinking about how bad their attendance must be for the season. Especially because I remember writing an article LAST August about how their attendance was sinking like a stone. In fact, it was almost exactly one year to the day when the St. Louis-Post Dispatch reported that the five smallest announced crowds in the history of Busch Stadium III (excluding the pandemic years) all happened last season around this time.
Well, guess what, it’s much worse than you are likely thinking.
Busch Stadium III hosted its inaugural season in 2006, and here are the numbers for attendance/game each season since then.
Cardinals Attendance/Game at Busch Stadium III
2006: 42,5892007: 43,8542008: 42,3832009: 41,2752010: 40,7562011: 38,1972012: 40,2732013: 41,6022014: 43,7122015: 43,4682016: 42,5252017: 42,5722018: 42,0202019: 42,9682020: Pandemic2021: Pandemic fallout2022: 40,9942023: 40,0132024: 35,5322025: 28,660!
Look at that drop off!
We were poking fun at them for hitting 35K/game last season, but this year they fell UNDER 29,000 fans per game (and that’s not even accounting for “real” attendance, of people coming through the turnstiles).
The last time the Cardinals had an attendance figure that low was 1995! And even that was probably a flukey low number because of the strike (it was above 32K in the seasons before and after).
No, the last time the Cardinals’ attendance was CONSISTENTLY in a range like this was back in 1984.
I just feel so bad for them. It must really stink to have such terrible fans.
The Cubs, for what it’s worth, are sitting at an average attendance per game at 37,485 this season, up from 35,923 last year. And they, too, haven’t been under 29K since there was only one Toy Story movie in existence.
But, hey, what do you expect from the fans of a fourth-place team that is 17.0 games out of first place in August and has players throwing bats that hit their own coaches?
Hey, I know that guy.
