The world of college athletics is in a constant state of change, from last year’s House settlement, to the new five-in-five age-based eligibility model, and most recently, the prospect of the Protect College Sports Act being voted on in the Senate in the coming days.
Another potential change that could be coming quickly would have a direct impact specifically on swimming & diving.
It has become fairly common for swimmers to join their college teams for the second semester in January and jump right into the swing of the season, especially for international swimmers. We saw that this past season from a number of swimmers, including Israeli native Anastasia Gorbenko (Louisville), Japanese native Mizuki Hirai (Tennessee) and American Alex Shackell (Indiana), who all made significant contributions to their new teams in the 2026 postseason.
However, this may no longer be possible.
A source with knowledge of the situation told SwimSwam that the NCAA is considering implementing a rule change that would make winter sports athletes who join their team after the start of the competitive season ineligible for the remainder of the campaign (until the following fall).
This would be applicable to sports where competition in the fall semester has NCAA qualifying opportunities, which includes swimming and diving.
The proposed change is reportedly set to be voted on in October and would be implemented immediately.
If this were to be passed, the midseason addition would be a thing of the past in swimming and diving.
Luka Mijatovic, the top-ranked recruit in the boys’ high school class of 2027, was reported to be graduating early and joining the University of Texas for the second semester this coming season by local newspaper Pleasanton Weekly, only for the article to be edited to simply read: “who will head to the University of Texas after graduating from Foothill.”
If this rule change were to come down the pike in a few months, it would spoil any plans Mijatovic, and likely several swimmers, had of joining the NCAA in January.
