San Diego State University students say hello to the new school year

COLLEGE AREA – On a muggy late August Monday, countless students were roaming the campus of San Diego State University on the first day of classes for the 2025-26 school year.

According to a university release, the total number of students enrolled between the main campus and SDSU’s Imperial Valley campus is expected to exceed 40,000.

When you add in the school’s global campus, online degrees, and professional certificate programs, fall enrollment is predicted to top 43,000.

New students are expected to surpass 6,600 this school year, topping the record of 6,538 only a year ago. SDSU said it recorded more than 123,000 total applicants for the 2025-26 calendar school year.

Among some of the new students on campus on Monday, it was not uncommon for some to stop and ask for directions on how to get to their next class or where to find supplies.

For older students who know the drill, it was meeting up with classmates they may not have seen for a few months during summer break.

No matter the class year or where they were heading, most students seemed in a positive mood as they dealt with the heat.

Senior financial services major Luke Hiddessen was sitting at the information booth not far from the Conrad Prebys Aztec Student Union.

“Many of the students stopping by here are asking where their classes are, where offices are, what their meal plan balances involve, and more,” Hiddessen said.

According to Hiddessen, some 40 students had stopped by in just the first 90 or so minutes he had been at his table.

For Hiddessen, his last year at SDSU is bittersweet.

Although he is excited to move on to the next adventure in his life once he graduates, he said he will miss certain things about the campus.

“The people, the lifestyle, and the weather are things I will miss here,” Hiddessen said.

Another senior staying busy on this first day back was Zac Levy.

Working at one of the Aztec Markets on campus, Levy said the previous week had been even busier. That is when many on-campus students and their parents arrived to get the former moved in.

“Last Thursday and Friday (Aug. 21-22) were pretty busy,” Levy remarked. “Most of the people coming in here are looking for their daily snacks. It gets busy here, too, before games (sporting events).”

Senior Maddy Tompkins, a kinesiology major, said she was excited to be back on campus as she prepares for her final school year.

“I’m looking forward to several things this year, including growing in my faith and hanging out with my friends,” Tompkins said. When asked if returning to campus once again was any different this time around, she said it was pretty much the same.

Junior communications manager Danika Friend said she’s looking forward to another exciting year on the Mesa.

“The professors have been nice,” Friend said. This is a pretty campus and I like the people here. A member of the Chi Omega Sorority, Friend said she was looking forward to the upcoming rush festivities.

“This school is very Greek life-oriented,” Friend said. “I’d tell any woman coming into the sorority to go in with an open mind.”

Having an open mind in college serves students well on many different fronts.

On this first day back to class, it seemed like most of them were open-minded about finding where they had to go and what all was in front of them as SDSU kicks off its 128th year of serving the area and beyond.
