Colston Loveland finished the preseason with five targets, four catches, 38 receiving yards, and a clean bill of health. First-year Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson schemed some early looks for Loveland in the preseason, which was nice to see. You always want to see your favorite team’s first-round picks get touches early, then get out of dodge when the rest of the regulars are out of the lineup. Colston Loveland had shoulder surgery in January and the team slow-played his development throughout the offseason program. Loveland was limited during the onboarding process, but it did not take long for him to catch on once he was given the green light. That he was healthy at the outset of training camp allowed the Bears to accelerate his development in the summer. Now, the University of Michigan product is set up to be in a tight end tandem with Cole Kmet. And with Kmet being open to taking the rookie under his wing, it feels like the sky is the limit for what that partnership can do for the offense.

The most encouraging news regarding Colston Loveland’s development this summer is that he has already made a strong impression on quarterback Caleb Williams. Seeing that bond show up in the Bears’ preseason games with Williams targeting Loveland provided evidence that QB1’s comments regarding the rookie tight end weren’t just for show. I hope whatever good vibes those two have going on can show up in the regular season.
