A man on probation and a 13-year-old boy have been arrested after being found Friday with five kilograms of fentanyl, according to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office.
Just before 10 a.m., detectives were conducting surveillance near 3rd and Orange avenues in Chula Vista, officials said in a news release.
During this operation, part of an effort to counter cross-border narcotics smuggling, the authorities saw a young man carrying a backpack. He approached the boy and handed the minor the backpack. The teen took it and walked into a nearby liquor store, Sheriff’s officials said.
Detectives at that point intervened, checking with the boy to see if he should be in school. They then learned his age and discovered that the backpack contained just over 11 pounds of powdered fentanyl.
Authorities took both the boy and the man, Martin Corona, 19, into custody. Corona, already on probation for felony narcotics convictions, was sent to the Imperial Beach Sheriff’s Substation. He faces charges of narcotics trafficking, child endangerment and conspiracy.
The juvenile was cited and released to the custody of his parents. His name was not provided because of his age.
