HENRIETTA, N.Y. — Parents, students and teachers gathered at Rush-Henrietta Senior High School for a public forum aimed at stopping fights on campus organized by district leaders and the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.

The meeting followed a fight at the school last week that sent one student to the hospital and led to a schoolwide lockdown. District leaders spent the past two nights listening to community members about possible changes to improve safety.

News10NBC’s Tom Kowalski attended the meeting, where dozens of people voiced their concerns about the future of the school. Melissa Havill, a parent of a bullied student, shared her son’s hopes.

“My son did state that he’s hoping that they’ll understand that they need to do something before kids get to a mental state where they can’t come back from, where they do not want to be a part of the world anymore,” Havill said.

Havill said her son has faced physical and mental bullying for years and wants to see real change. She called for accountability among students.

“Have the students that are the problem take accountability. As you’ve heard in a lot of these meetings, it seems to be a very small percentage. And that’s what you hear over and over again. And I believe it’s the same percentage I complained about for the entire year last year. I did state up there that I believe that the events of last week may not have occurred had they listened to my pleas last year, because it seems to involve the same individuals over and over again,” Havill said.

School security was another major topic. Superintendent Dr. Barbara Mullen explained steps being taken to address concerns.

“So one thing that’s already noticeable is we’ve extended our contract with Patriot Services. And so those are the people with the red shirts. But it’s not just about having a partnership with them. We have staff security members. We had three in the building for the last couple of years, and then we reduced it down one person. But we know that those three in addition to the security stack that we have, are just simply not enough for the square footage of the building,” Mullen said.

Senior Addison Sweet urged administrators to listen to teachers and students.

“Listening to your students, listening to your teachers especially, is the most important thing here, because I may not have a perfect solution, but the teachers who have been here for ten, 20, 30 years will have a better solution than any of the students,” Sweet said.

District leaders are planning another community forum. The date has not yet been released.
