There are four questions I hope get answered when the dust settles from Friday’s preseason finale featuring the Chicago Bears and Kansas City Chiefs:
WILL THE BEARS FIND CLARITY AT LEFT TACKLE? Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson went into Preseason Week 2 hoping to gain clarity (his words, not mine) on his team’s left tackle situation. One week later, Johnson still seeks clarity. Don’t we all? After spending the summer thinking about how rookie Ozzy Trapilo had a clear path to a starting job if he could make the most of the time given to him at left tackle, it sure sounds like Braxton Jones has the inside track. ESPN’s Courtney Cronin recently shared (h/t BearsWire) her belief that it “seems the Bears are close to calling that battle with Jones as the Week 1 starter.” WHICH RUNNING BACK WILL ACE THEIR AUDITION? With Roschon Johnson and Kyle Monangai sidelined with injuries last week, Brittain Brown and Ian Wheeler were left to shoulder the load out of the Bears’ backfield against the Bills. Both players scored touchdowns as they tried to stake a claim to a roster spot. Brown and Wheeler are still in a position to make the most of preseason playing time in Friday night’s showdown against the Chiefs. I imagine this will be an emotional return to Kansas City for Wheeler, who suffered a season-ending knee injury in Preseason Week 3 at Arrowhead Stadium last summer. It would be pretty sweet to see him score tonight. WHO WILL STEP UP IN THE SECONDARY? Terell Smith’s season ended before it could truly get started after he suffered a season-ending injury in the preseason win against Buffalo. Starting cornerbacks Jaylon Johnson and Kyler Gordon have been sitting out while dealing with their own respective injuries. This would be a nice time for Tyrique Stevenson to level up his game. But don’t sleep on Nahshon Wright, the free agent addition who put together a strong training camp. Tonight’s performance in the defensive backfield could lead Chicago’s front office to browse the waiver wire or stand pat at the position. HOW MUCH WILL THE STARTERS PLAY? Kansas City Chiefs Head Coach Andy Reid began the week declaring his starters would play, but didn’t specify for how long. One day later, his Bears counterpart — Ben Johnson — did the same while chopping it up with Kay Adams. I have been pleasantly surprised with how Johnson has handled the preseason to this point. So I am curious to see how he goes about business in the preseason finale.
