Nazar, Narratives, Camaraderie, Connor? Kaiser? College, Maggie, and Other Blackhawks Bullets

There are a few more angles to consider in the wake of the fun news on Thursday that the Blackhwaks signed Frank Nazar to a seven-year extension. I’m going to jump into it with a quote from Nazar that was repeated in the post-signing story by Mark Lazerus:

“I want to play in Chicago for the rest of my life,” Nazar told The Athletic in June. “I think it’s a great city and a great team and a greater organization.

There are so many people that happily jump into the comments on Chicago-based Blackhawks stories at on national/international/league-wide pieces and love to throw shade and talk about stuff like “nobody wants to play for the Blackhawks.” But the comments we consistently, repeatedly get from the young players is that they want to be the next generation “to do what Toews and Kane did” (we know it was more than just those two).

Part of that is these young guys grew up watching those Blackhawks teams. Nazar, like so many 20-something American-born players, has elements of his game that are influenced by watching Kane when he was young.

But another part is the fact that there is a genuine camaraderie with the young guys in the organization that’s been fostered beginning with the off-ice development camps in July. That plan initially raised some eyebrows a few years ago, but it appears to be doing exactly what they hoped: make these young guys friends on and off the ice. Just go look at the Instagram stories of guys like Connor Bedard, Oliver Moore, Ethan Del Mastro and Alex Vlasic after the deal was announced.

If Nazar can be for Bedard what Kane was for Toews (or vice versa, I’ll let y’all pick which is which), the next decade could set up to be really, really exciting.

One other narrative that has a few more cracks in its foundation is that Kyle Davidson won’t sign a bigger money deal. Before the Nazar contract, the biggest gross dollars contract he had written was Vlasic’s six-year, $24.6M contract. That’s a $4.6M AAV. The largest AAV Davidson had given a player was $5.5M to Tyler Bertuzzi. He extended Ryan Donato this summer for $4M per. Davidson is doubling down on Nazar here, and he should also remove some of the perception that he’s “only a $4-5M GM.” Another aspect of the Nazar contract that again bears repeating is that this is the largest deal for a player with as limited a resume as he has in the NHL. No doubt this is a gamble by the organization that Nazar is going to spend the next decade taking the dynamic player we saw in the final weeks of the regular season and at the IIHF Men’s World Championship and build on that into being a star in the league. With the cap going up as quickly as it is, the value of the second half of the deal could be exceptional.

gutsy move by the Blackhawks to extend Nazar long-term this early into his career… but he already is showing signs of being able to play up to that $6million range and that should only trend up as he develops pic.twitter.com/cMJeuefVTl

    — Shayna (@shaynagoldman_) August 21, 2025 One other element to keep in mind with this contract is its significance for Nazar’s agent. Kevin Magnuson, the son of Blackhawks legend Keith, is just starting his own agency this year. And this is the first significant contract he’s gotten done since going out on his own. Obviously the Blackhawks have a unique place in his family’s hearts, but I also know how much dialogue there has been between the front office and Kevin about Nazar’s development and some of his other clients (Aidan Thompson, Craig Smith among them). Congrats to Kevin and his colleagues for getting this deal done. And congrats to Frank for landing a contract that sets him up not just financially, but also puts him in position to be one of the centerpieces of the Blackhawks’ immediate future.

We are very fortunate to represent Frank Nazar and his awesome family. It has been an honor to work with the Naz Fam for many years and be a part of Frank’s growth as a man and hockey player. Cheers to the brightest of futures ahead for FN91 and the @NHLBlackhawks! t.co/ZGqsXpHPqc

    — Kevin Magnuson (@kevinmags27) August 21, 2025 One has to think the Blackhawks getting this done now means Bedard is next. He, like Nazar, would be an RFA next summer. And if Nazar got $6.59M…. Let’s not forget Wyatt Kaiser needs a deal still… The NHLPA’s media availability in Milan started today, and apparently Lukas Reichel is excited for Nazar to buy him food.

    — Michael Russo (@RussoHockey) August 22, 2025 Nazar and Bedard didn’t make NHL Network’s top 20 centers in the league this summer. Oh well…

    Our Top 20 Centers Right Now list has a total of:• 12 Stanley Cups• 5 Conn Smythe Trophies• 10 Ted Lindsay Awards• 8 Hart Trophies• 8 Art Ross Trophies• 7 Maurice Richard Trophies• 3 Selke TrophiesWhat do you think of our list?@NHL | #NHLTopPlayers pic.twitter.com/7xSsx0hpuh

    — NHL Network (@NHLNetwork) August 20, 2025 A reminder that we’re going to drop the top five on our all-time list of the top 25 Blackhawks later this morning. It shouldn’t be hard to figure out who the five are, but in what order?

The Cubs won this week’s five-game series (and the season series) against the Brewers, but that brings mixed reactions. Ben Johnson has BIG confidence in the Bears’ quarterback room. The Bulls are giving away DRose collectibles at four (4!) games this coming season!
