Fullerton football starts new season with victory over Anaheim

ANAHEIM — What a difference a year makes.

After a winless 2024 campaign, the Fullerton football team started this season with a 40-6 win over rival Anaheim on Thursday night at Glover Stadium.

Fullerton’s new coach, Pete Karavedas, called it a validating win.

“I’m just so happy for our kids, because they’ve been through a lot,” he said. “And you know, they trusted us right away, and they bought in right away. And to see all their hard work pay off to be up 34-0 at halftime. It’s just so validating for them.”

It was the first win for Fullerton (1-0) since it beat Buena Park in the 2023 regular-season finale.

“I’m just so happy for our boys.” Karadevas said. “… I just want them to enjoy it tonight and enjoy this moment. Obviously, we got a lot of work to do, but, yeah, just a special night for the kids, really happy for them.”

Senior Caden Wise served as a catalyst for the Indians with three first-half touchdowns. He scored on a 23-yard run, a 52-yard punt return in the first quarter and a 50-yard TD reception.

“What a playmaker, right?,” Karavedas said. “I mean, to win football games, to win a lot of football games, you not only need guys to do what you tell them, but you need a couple guys who can do some things that you don’t coach. And he made a bunch of moves and did a bunch of things that just are beyond anything we coach, just being an athlete and being a playmaker.

“When you have guys who can make a few plays that, again, things you can’t coach, it’s pretty special.”

Fullerton quarterback Sergio Andrade went 10 of 13 passing for 160 yards and two touchdowns in his first start. Andrade threw TD passes to Wise and Luke Viramontes.

Running back Cyrus Aviles and quarterback Ethan Edwards also added rushing touchdowns for the Indians.

The season opener featured two of the oldest public high schools in Orange County, renewing the county’s longest rivalry. Fullerton opened in 1893 while Anaheim opened in 1898.

Fullerton has now defeated Anaheim (0-1) in 13 straight games.

Anaheim coach Gus Martinez, who spent 24 years at Fullerton, was a critical part in resuming the rivalry which dates back to the early 1900s.

“This is what it’s all about, man,” Martinez said. “I mean, we’re separated by three miles and the 91 freeway. They play Pop Warner against each other, they play Little League against each other. So it’s a great rivalry. It’s something that I felt should be back.”

“I know some people are disappointed that we’re not playing Western. But this game, for me personally, and I think as a whole, it’s just it’s more along battle lines, you know. They’re closer to us and it just means a lot to try to win this game and kick off the season with it. I want to keep it right here and really just always focus on that rivalry, that you work all summer to get to this game and kick it off.”

Lloyd Nolasco scored the only TD for the Colonists late in the fourth quarter.

Anaheim will face Katella next week.
