The Democrats have realised how to beat Trump – and he hates it

WOW! WHAT AN HONOR ON MOUNT RUSHMORE THANK YOU!-

It’s Trump by style. Trump by syntax. Trump by self absorption. But it ain’t Trump.

There’s been a hostile takeover of the caps lock key on X by the bluest of all Democrats – the California Governor Gavin Newsom.

In the last 96 hours this potential presidential candidate has called himself AMERICAS MOST FAVOURITE GOVERNOR. He’s lashed out at Fox News anchors DANA “DING DONG’ PERINO, and GREG “GARBAGEMAN” GUTFELD and THANKED a (California based) opinion poll that rates California the MOST FUN STATE.

It’s high quality trolling. That mimics not just the vacuity of Donald Trump’s favoured form of communication. But also nods to his vanity, corruption, and weakness. And it’s driving the White House slightly mad.

When Trump’s special envoy Richard Grenell ordered Newsom to “stop making fun of working class people – Elitism is so ugly”, Newsom responded with a photo of Trump in his all-gold apartment – and a tagline that repeated “elitism is so ugly”.

When the White House press team were asked about the new kid on the block, they simultaneously denied even “thinking” about Newsom, and immediately sent out a meme of Trump “not thinking about Newsom”. Because this is 2025 and that’s what the Office of the United States president does. Memes.

Newsom’s delighted response to this was: “Triggered. Weak. SAD!”

And for all those who want to judge if it’s gone too far, check out the post by regular creator of US political memes, @PaulleyTicks – a photoshop of that defiant tableau after the assassination attempt on Trump’s life. This one shows a bloodied Newsom laughing with his security detail whilst holding up a bottle of tomato ketchup.

Newsom is clearly having fun. Or maybe we should say the savvy 14-year-old he’s probably employed to sort his socials strategy is clearly having fun. But it’s giving the Dems something to chew on.

Do you have to start sounding like Trump – even in jest – to compete with him? The chin strokers of the party will call it satire and say Newsom is merely “holding up a mirror to Maga to show Republicans what they’ve come to tolerate”.

And certainly, when you see those words through a different mouth it has the same effect on the brain as those AI babies that talk about nuclear fission in their cots. But you don’t have to go highbrow to appreciate what’s happening here.

Newsom is pulling the algorithm to his favour, and getting his supporters – through their own parodies and photoshops to do the rest of the work for him.

It’s not only Maga inspired in its content, it’s Maga inspired in its spread.

Michelle Obama famously told her party to appeal to their better angels, urging Hillary Clinton supporters ahead of the 2016 election that “when they go low, we go high”. The rallying cry was well intentioned. And wrong. Trump won the election by appealing to much baser instincts. And the shock tactic sent him viral.

When Democrats lost to him again last November, many in the party acted like they’d been run over. Unwilling or unable to fight back. And that’s partly because Trump is clever at laying traps. When Trump ordered federal troops onto the streets of DC to provide emergency crime relief, there was almost no pushback, little visible protest – even though the idea is as dangerous as it is bizarre. You don’t fight car jackings with soldiers. You do it with better policing and community support.

When students were being told to “buddy up” on campus and take ID everywhere they went, in case they were snatched off the street, the Dems were largely silent, terrified of picking a fight that would put them on the wrong side of an immigration debate. There is no right side to illegal deportation. It doesn’t happen in sound democracies.

By failing to speak out, these actions are being normalised. Until someone kicks down the door.

Newsom is one of the few Democrats who’s vocally shaking the party out of its stupor. His content may be playful – provocative. But the message is fierce.

There’s little doubt he’d like to be his party’s nominee for president in 2028. But even if he doesn’t pull it off, they owe him one. He’s taking his elbow to the Democratic ribs and poking them all where it hurts. Block capitals – before the ubiquitous Trump foghorn – used to signal a scream of urgency. Perhaps it’s time they did again.
