REPORT: Tyson Bagent is Getting a 2-Year Extension From the Bears

The Chicago Bears are keeping backup quarterback Tyson Bagent around beyond the 2025 season.

Bagent entered this summer in a camp battle with Case Keenum to be QB2 behind Caleb Williams. And now that he has a contract extension coming, I think it is safe to say he is locked into that particular role. NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero has details:

The #Bears are signing QB Tyson Bagent to a two-year, $10 million contract extension that can be worth up to $16M with incentives, his reps at Milk and Honey Sports and Key Player Management tell The Insiders.@CHGO_Bears first reported the deal, which runs through 2027. pic.twitter.com/RCH0N2boAk

It is a two-year extension for Chicago’s backup quarterback. And it looks like a sweetheart deal. The contract runs through the 2027 season and could be worth as much as $16 million with incentives. I find it interesting that Caleb Williams’ rookie contract and Tyson Bagent’s extension are now in line with each other. Admittedly, I don’t know what to make of this revelation. However, I appreciate how the deals are symmetrical when it comes to length.

For what it’s worth, Tyson Bagent has looked good during the preseason. He has completed 63.4 percent of his passes, thrown for 299 yards, tossed a pair of touchdowns, and has been intercepted just once. Bagent has a 2-2 record as a starter, with all four appearances in that role coming in place of an injured Justin Fields in 2023. The Shepherd University product has more interceptions (6) than touchdowns (3) in the regular season. And while I want him to improve on those career numbers, the reality is that the best case scenario is one in which he can’t get on the field to do so because Caleb Williams is so darn good.

Tyson Bagent is reportedly receiving an extension from the Chicago Bears

This Tyson Bagent extension news does not come as a surprise to me. And if you spent time reading us in the summer (thanks, by the way!), then it probably isn’t a surprise to you.

We discussed Bagent as a sneaky extension candidate back in May. Here is an excerpt from that post:

I suppose this can go one of two ways for Tyson Bagent and the Bears. The two sides could work out a deal that keeps him entrenched as QB2 in Chicago. Or the two teams could part ways after the season. Maybe Bagent can find a deal with a team that will allow him to compete for a starting job. It is probably too early to figure out what team would make that happen. But it is something we should be considering when we discuss the big-picture roster construction stuff that is always rattling around.

As for what an extension for a backup quarterback should look like, good luck finding a consensus on that debate. There is a belief in some circles that teams should churn and burn through QB2 options. Some value a backup QB. Others don’t value the position at all. Recent notable backup quarterback deals include Zach Wilson (1 year and $6 million with the Dolphins), Jarrett Stidham (2 years, $12 million with the Broncos), and Mason Rudolph (2 years, $7.5 million with the Steelers). None of these deals are prohibitive, but I’d understand why some folks would have a pause when it comes to extending a backup quarterback.

Even though Tyson Bagent was part of the Bears’ 2023 rookie class, he would have been a free agent after this season because he signed as an undrafted free agent. So while his rookie classmates still have to wait out a year, Bagent gets to cash in early with a new deal. And based on the data points mentioned above, it looks like a deal that is at fair market value. All in all, it looks like a win-win to me.

In the end, keeping Tyson Bagent around behind Caleb Williams is a nice luxury. Bagent can spend the next few seasons learning under the tutelage of first-year Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson and his coaching staff without the pressure that comes with being a starter. Perhaps when his contract is up, then Bagent can hit free agency well-equipped to compete for a starting job.
