NCAA Releases 2026-2027 NCAA Division I Swimming and Diving Championship Standards

By Madeline Folsom on SwimSwam

The NCAA has released the qualification standards for the 2027 NCAA Division I Swimming and Diving Championships.

Both meets will race at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center in Austin, with the women’s meet running from March 17-20 and the men’s from March 24-27.

After reviewing the feedback following the massive changes the organization made to the 2026 meet, the Oversight Committee approved more changes to start with the 2027 championships including the reinstatement of ‘B’ finals.

One of the other changes they made affected the qualification standards. In 2026, the NCAA introduced the concept of “automatic qualifiers via conference title” to swimming and diving. If an athlete won their conference title, swimming under the qualifying standard in the winning swim, they would automatically earn a spot at the NCAA Championships. Last year, the standard was set at a three-year average of the 72nd-best-time in each event.

For the 2027 Championships, this standard was changed. The men’s qualifying time has been set at the 64th best time from the 2025-2026 season, while the women’s has been set at the 88th best time.

The change in determining the qualifying standard led to a big shift in the men’s qualifying times, with all of the standards getting faster, and some seeing significant changes.

The men’s 50 freestyle saw one of the biggest comparative shifts with the 2027 QT coming in at 19.22, more than two tenths faster than the 2026 QT of 19.43.

The women’s standards had more variability with some getting slightly faster, like the 200 breaststroke seeing a two tenth drop from 2:11.27 to 2:11.08, and some getting significantly slower, like the mile standard of 16:34.79 adding more than nine seconds to the 2026 standard of 16:25.29.

As a reminder, athletes can qualify for the championships in two ways. If they swim under the NCAA qualifying standard en route to winning the conference title, they are automatically in.

If they swim the qualifying time not in a conference title winning race, they are ranked by time and selected event-by-event, lined up to an equal number across all events, until the maximum number of individual swimmers have been selected (235 for men, 281 for women).
