Making Horrible History, Totally Not Worried, Rea Solid, and Other Cubs Bullets

The best things I did for my baseball brain’s mental health was to decide two weeks ago that I was done caring about the Milwaukee Brewers. They are clearly going to do what they are going to do and blow out the NL Central, so eff it. Not gonna keep twisting myself up in knots trying to figure out how they do absurd stuff every single day like coming back from 8-1 to beat the Reds last night.

Heck, it’s better for the Cubs for the Reds to lose right now anyway …

The Cubs have now gone 35 straight games without a comeback victory of any kind, which I knew was almost unbelievable, but it turns out it’s literally their longest such streak EVER, per Ed Hartig. It’s already the longest stretch EVER by SIX GAMES. The loss – the Cubs’ 8th in their last 12 games – took them out of the top Wild Card spot for the first time in a while, so add that to the list of things that could be slipping away. They are not worried and such:

“The season’s far from over. There’s a lot of baseball left to play, and to this point, we’ve put ourselves in a good spot.”Ian Happ on the Cubs’ recent frustrations. pic.twitter.com/vOENVl4FlI

“I believe in this group a lot. I got confidence going into tomorrow in every single one of us. But it’s up to us, we gotta make it happen.”Nico Hoerner believes in this team. pic.twitter.com/rsu1qFn3qv

    — Marquee Sports Network (@WatchMarquee) August 15, 2025 “The Cubbies are the Cubbies,” Pete Crow-Armstrong had said before the game, per the Sun-Times. “We’re going to keep playing the same baseball we’ve played all year. It’s been an interesting two weeks, but we’re fine. I don’t think there’s any worry in the world.” PCA, overall, had a good game for the Cubs, contributing to both of the runs the team scored, and notching three hits, including an RBI and a run. He aggressively tried to take second base at one point and was thrown out from the outfield (how many times have we seen him succeed?), and he aggressively over-slid second base on what would’ve been an easy, successful steal in the 9th (how many times has he succeeded without a mistake?). Hard for me to be upset at him given the entirety of his game, even if it’s also fair game to say that kind of mistake in the 9th cannot happen.

“When things are not going your way, you’re going to get uncharacteristic things like that happening.”Cliff Floyd on PCA over sliding second base in the 9th inning. pic.twitter.com/2OrzozUcid

    — Marquee Sports Network (@WatchMarquee) August 15, 2025 Craig Counsell spoke generally to the risk when you try to steal a base, but wants Pete Crow-Armstrong trying to steal in that situation (obviously):

    — Marquee Sports Network (@WatchMarquee) August 15, 2025 The Cubs wasted another great starting pitcher performance, with Colin Rea going five strong: That’s three starts in a row for Rea at just one or two earned runs allowed. He had a two-start blip before that, but prior to that, it was another four straight games at just one or two (3.35 ERA total over those 9 starts). He has inarguably been everything the Cubs could’ve realistically hoped he would be, and that’s before you even consider the fact that he wasn’t expected to be in the rotation from day one and then just stay there. If you’re getting 3% better than league average performance from your 6th/7th starter who was forced to become your 4/5 all year, that’s pretty outstanding. The Cubs hold a $6 million club option on Rea for 2026, too. Great signing. © Kamil Krzaczynski-Imagn Images Some newly-arriving Cubs seemed less prepared for the annual Chicago Air and Water Show than others:

    — Jomboy Media (@JomboyMedia) August 15, 2025 Ian Happ and Dansby Swanson gave it the, “Wow, that was loud, I want to see it.” Justin Turner and Matt Shaw gave it the, “OH MY GOD AM I DYING?!?!” X-Rays were negative, but this obviously has some potential NL playoff implications if Jhoan Duran has to miss time:
