Let’s Keep an Eye on Justin Jefferson’s Hamstring Injury

The closer we get to Week 1 of the regular season, the more I will look into injuries around the league — particularly ones that pop up on Chicago Bears opponents.

For instance, this Justin Jefferson hamstring issue is on my radar because his Minnesota Vikings (1) play the Bears and (2) represent Chicago’s Week 1 opponent on Monday Night Football. Pro Football Talk’s Josh Alper writes that Vikings Head Coach Kevin O’Connell said his top receiver is progressing and will receive a re-evaluation by the team’s medical staff next week. Jefferson, 26, has reached the 1,000-yard receiving mark in each of his first five seasons in the NFL, has caught 100+ passes in three of the last four years, and was named to the Pro Bowl in four of his five years as a pro. The guy is a star. And an absolute menace to NFL defensive backs.

The latest Justin Jefferson hamstring injury first popped up in late July. O’Connell called it a “very mild” hamstring strain when discussing the news with reporters at Vikings training camp. Jefferson is a star wide receiver, so news regarding his injury was always going to snag my attention. But with the Vikes and Bears squaring off in Week 1, an injury this close to the start of the regular season amplifies my need to dig into it.

Justin Jefferson’s hamstring injury is lingering during Vikings training camp

It is worth pointing out that Justin Jefferson has had issues with hamstrings in the past. And while his current injury is with his left hamstring, Jefferson missed seven games in 2023 due to a troublesome right hamstring. Among the games Jefferson missed in 2023 with the hamstring issue were both games against the Bears. Chicago and Minnesota split the season series, with the road team winning each game. Jefferson still finished that 2023 campaign with 68 receptions and 1,074 receiving yards in 10 games, which speaks to the wideout’s excellence and playmaking ability even in a shortened season.

The Minnesota Vikings will already be without wide receiver Jordan Addison when they take on the Bears in Week 1, as he serves the first game of a three-game suspension. However, being without Addison and Justin Jefferson would be doubly problematic for Minnesota. Because even though Vikings Head Coach Kevin O’Connell is one of the best in the business and quarterback JJ McCarthy has oodles of potential, an injured Jefferson missing time could be a potential game-changer. Hence, I will continue watching for injury reports and updates between now and when the season kicks off in 25 days.
