The Chicago Bears made a wave of transactions on Tuesday afternoon. There are some newbies in the secondary, while some familiar faces have been sent away. Here is the latest…
Meet the Bears’ 4 new defensive backs
After the injury bug gnawed at the Bears last week, the team hosted eight defensive backs for tryouts on Monday. One day later, the team announced that four of them are hanging around and joining the squad. Let’s meet them:
SAFETIES
Millard Bradford: Bradford went undrafted in 2024 after playing collegiately at TCU from 2019-23. Despite his undrafted status, Bradford ended up with the New Orleans Saints and played in three games with the team last season. As fate would have it, Bradford made his pro debut on Nov. 3, 2023 — just one day before the Saints fired Dennis Allen as their head coach. Now, Bradford and Allen are reunited in Chicago. Mark Perry: Perry went undrafted in 2024 after playing his college ball at TCU (2022-23) and Colorado (2019-21). Even though he has yet to appear in a regular-season game, Perry has made the rounds on practice squads and has held down offseason roster spots with the Miami Dolphins, Houston Texans, and New England Patriots. Perry also spent some time with the Tennessee Titans, but was waived on August 5.CORNERBACKS
Mekhi Garner: Garner spent his college years playing cornerback for the University of Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns (2019-21) and LSU Tigers (2022). Signing Garner means the Bears are adding yet another tall and lanky cornerback to their roster. Garner is listed at 6-foot-2, which is tall for a cornerback. While at Louisiana, Garner earned third-team All-Sun Belt in 2021. And for what it’s worth, he does have some pro experience under his belt, having appeared in three games for the Philadelphia Eagles in 2023. Kaleb Hayes: As a pro, Hayes has made stops with the Jaguars (2023), New York Giants (2023-24), Denver Broncos (2024), and Green Bay Packers (2025). Hayes split time in college at Oregon State (2017-20) and BYU (2021-22), but did not come away with a single interception during his career on campus.Jaylon Johnson, Kyler Gordon, and Terell Smith are among the cornerbacks in Bears camp dealing with injury issues right now. I don’t think any of these issues will be too problematic for the long term. However, the team might be walking a tightrope getting Johnson ready for the team’s Week 1 opener against the Vikings. Don’t get me wrong. Jaylon is a pro’s pro, and I do not doubt that he could be ready for Week 1 with minimal work in camp. But going into a season-opener on Monday Night Football against all-world Bears tormentor Justin Jefferson without practice reps in the summer is a dangerous proposition.

Kicker Jonathan Kim was one of two players who were placed on waivers on Tuesday. Kim was one of the more notable undrafted free agent signings who joined the Bears this past spring. But after Cairo Santos drilled a 57-yard field goal in the team’s preseason tie against the Miami Dolphins, perhaps the front office figured that it could use that roster spot in a better way. I suppose that someone had to go with the needs in the defensive backfield.
The other player placed on waivers was wide receiver John Jackson. A teammate of starting quarterback Caleb Williams at USC, Jackson didn’t make many memorable plays in the preseason. In fact, his notable drop in the fourth quarter of the tied ballgame on Sunday might have been a factor that nudged him off the roster.
Chicago’s football team also gave defensive back Major Burns the waived/injured treatment. Burns, another notable UDFA signing from the spring, suffered an injury during the team’s preseason game against the Dolphins. Fellow defensive back Shaun Wade was placed on injured reserve.
