A woman has died after attempting to board a small boat crossing the English Channel, French authorities have confirmed.
The tragedy occurred just hours before Home Office figures confirmed the number of small boat arrivals have reached 50,000 under Labour.
The French coastguard confirmed the death of a migrant in the English Channel following reports that a young woman drowned whilst trying to mount a boat off a beach near Dunkirk in the early hours of Tuesday.
A spokesperson for the French rescue services confirmed that a person had died while trying to reach the English coast but declined to give further details.
According to French media reports, a young woman drowned at about 4am after failing to board an inflatable headed across the Channel and could not be located under cover of darkness.
The woman is believed to have been in her 30s, according to the Utopia 56 organisation, which supports displaced migrants at the French border.
The Home Office confirmed it was aware of “an incident” but deferred to the French authorities who are leading the investigation.
A UK Government spokesperson said: “We are aware of reports of an incident in the Channel in French territorial waters.
“French authorities are leading the response and investigation. We will not be commenting further at this stage.”
Official data confirmed on Tuesday that more than 50,000 people have arrived in the UK via a small boat in the English Channel since Labour won the general election last year.
