A few injury updates for the Cubs …
Miguel Amaya (oblique) could re-join the big league Cubs as soon as this week’s series in Toronto, per Craig Counsell. It’s been a longer road back than hoped for Amaya, but I’m sure the Cubs will be happy to get his bat back – he was hitting .280/.313/.505/126 wRC+ when he went on the IL back at the end of May.
Reese McGuire has filled in admirably (.235/.250/.459/93 wRC+, good defense), but I don’t think there’s any question the Cubs would prefer to have Amaya in there with Carson Kelly. The question will be whether McGuire is bounced for Amaya’s return, or little-utilized utility man Jon Berti.
Meanwhile, Jameson Taillon’s latest rehab start went well, and although he’s not on the schedule for the Toronto series, it’s possible he returns right after that. That second Iowa rehab outing saw him go 4.2 innings and 78 pitches, and took place on Friday. If the Cubs gave him a week, he would be starting the opener against the Pirates this Friday at Wrigley Field. Of note, Taillon’s ERA this season away from Wrigley Field is two runs higher than the strong 3.45 mark he’s posted at Wrigley. So waiting until Friday could make some sense.
Of course, it is at least as possible that Taillon (calf) will get another rehab start at Iowa and the Cubs will punt the decision on the Taillon return timing another week.
Some bad news to pass on from Tommy Birch on the injury front, as the Cubs’ possible starting depth took a big hit:
Cubs pitching prospect Brandon Birdsell, who was recently put on the @IowaCubs injured list, is done for the remainder of the season. Birdsell has been dealing with an elbow injury since April.
— Tommy Birch (@TommyBirch) August 11, 2025I don’t know anything more than that on Brandon Birdsell, who’d missed most of the season with a spring lat injury. Not sure what the deal is with the elbow issue – was he dealing with it as he rehabbed the lat? – but whatever happened, it was serious enough to end Birdsell’s season nearly two months early, all while he was on the cusp of being a true big league depth arm. So that suggests it’s pretty bad.
The Cubs have to make a 40-man decision on Birdsell by November, as he is Rule 5 Draft eligible this year. I suspect now that the decision – which once looked like a super easy one on the org’s 2024 pitcher of the year – will come down entirely to the status of that elbow. Terrible news for the 25-year-old righty, whose season ends after just 33.2 innings of work.
