Good morning and Happy Independence Day, Bleacher Nation!
No, I’m not letting yesterday’s lopsided loss bleed into today, especially because it’s this beautiful country of ours 250th July 4th. Not to mention, I also subscribe to Jalen Hurts’ philosophy when it comes to a bad loss.
Before we get to the bullets, please celebrate responsibly today/tonight. I’d prefer everyone comes back for tomorrow morning’s bullets with all 10 fingers to type with in the comments.
Good or bad, this Cubs team can’t stop making history. Be it Pete Crow-Armstrong’s June, Dansby Swanson’s outburst, a couple of 10-game winning streaks, a 10-game losing streak, and now losing by more than 15 after winning their previous game by more than 15. I very unoriginally coined this team the “cardiac Cubs” on my radio show this week, before the 23-3 win against the Padres, so I almost hesitate to ask what’s next as far as history-making goes with this team. That said, I’m sure most of us had already thought to ourselves that these Cubs remind us of that one Boston Beaneaters team from back in the day.The Cubs are the second team in MLB history to win one game by 15+ runs but then lose their next game by 15+ runs. The other was the Boston Beaneaters from September 10-11, 1894 – a 25-8 win followed by a 17-2 loss, both in Chicago against the Colts (the modern-day Cubs).
— OptaSTATS (@OptaSTATS) July 3, 2026 No paywall on Patrick Mooney’s story covering Jed Hoyer’s dugout press conference yesterday. Nothing earth-shattering from Jed (go figure) despite being peppered with questions about the upcoming trade deadline that, as of today, is 30 days away. My takeaway — if any big trades happen, they’ll be in the last 72 hours before the deadline. The Cubs play 24 games before then, so anything short of a 14-10 record probably keeps Jed from buying big? I also feel like it’s worth mentioning how we’ve seen some teams buy and sell at the deadline since Wild Card expansion, but I’m not sure Jed would try to thread that needle, especially after an offseason that was, for the most part, of an ‘all-in’ nature. Jed on the approach to the deadline: “You have to look at how your team is playing,” Hoyer said, “how you are relative to .500. How are your underlying numbers? How is your health? You have to understand your own team.”How Cubs president Jed Hoyer views the approaching trade deadline in an up-and-down season where the club has alternately looked like the best (and the worst) team in baseball t.co/o8J0F6Wj1N
— Patrick Mooney (@PJ_Mooney) July 3, 2026 Okay, let’s get to David Peterson and his abysmal second start as a Cub yesterday. As I mentioned, flushing it is — for the most part — the best strategy. That said, Peterson’s ERA is now 6.75, and his Baseball Savant page clearly indicates that his off-speed offerings are getting punished this season (they sure were yesterday), and his fastball has also lost effectiveness. There was data that indicated the Cubs adjusted his fastball for his first start in Milwaukee, but there’s obviously plenty more work to be done with the veteran starter to get him right again. Begging the question, how much patience will there be for Peterson as the team competes for a playoff spot? No, there are hardly any other options, but Jameson Taillon will be back soon, and Edward Cabrera some time after that (not nearly as quickly, though … ditto Ben Brown).David Peterson Baseball Savant page 2026 vs 2025. A lot of it is near identical. The HUGE differences are in the fastball run value, and especially the offspeed and pitching run value. #Cubs pic.twitter.com/ZkvDOnktob
— Cubs Daily (@Cubs_Daily1) July 4, 2026 Drew Pomeranz worked a clean ninth inning in his Cubs re-debut yesterday, but it’s hard to know what to take from that, given how out of hand the game was by that time. With Caleb Thielbar having taken a step back this season, here’s hoping Pomeranz can recapture what made him so effective with the Cubs last season, which looks to be no more complicated than getting his fastball back on track.I'm interested in Drew Pomeranz. It'd be a great story if he's good with the Cubs. It didn't work out in Anaheim, maybe due to that his fastball "running" 3x more than last year. The Cubs are familiar with him and his velo is normal, so I'm curious if they can unlock him.
— Brendan Miller (@brendan_cubs) July 3, 2026 Jaxon Wiggins made what was supposed to be his last rehab start at High-A South Bend last night, but his outing was cut short after just one inning due to rain. Wiggins did allow a home run in that one inning, but has otherwise looked good during his rehab appearances. For better or (likely) worse, I am getting my hopes up that he returns to Triple-A Iowa soon, pitches well, stays healthy and ultimately gets called up sometime in August to help the big league bullpen. The game has entered a lightning delay after just one inning, putting the rest of Wiggins’ rehab outing in jeopardy t.co/P02mQ8eaRQ
— Greg Huss (@OutOfTheVines) July 4, 2026 It’s been nice to see the great season that B.J. Murray has been putting together at Triple-A. No, the 26-year-old isn’t a ‘prospect’ anymore, but is he a late-blooming big league bench guy? It’s looking that way here in 2026. A switch-hitter with defensive versatility in the infield and outfield has value, whether that’s on the Cubs’ big league bench in 2027, or as a sweetener to make a trade happen at the deadline or this off-season. He’ll be Rule 5 Draft eligible this off-season if the Cubs don’t add him to the 40-man roster, so whether it’s with the Cubs or elsewhere, Murray’s play this season has certainly restored his value and extended his career.BJ Murray is 3-3 so far tonight with his 11th HR and a triple. He’s now batting .337 with a .999 OPS on the year for the Iowa #Cubs.Having a seriously incredible season, and the underlying data backs it up. t.co/jXL1xe949j pic.twitter.com/pV66kV19le
