IOC Expected to Name Hosts of the 2036 Olympics in 2029

Japan’s Kyodo News reports that the International Olympic Committee is expected to select the host of the 2036 Olympic Games during its 2029 session – possibly with a different system than has been used in recent years.

That 7 year timeline used to be the standard, but recent timelines have varied. Brisbane was named as the 2032 host in 2021, 11 years out; while the French Alps and Salt Lake City were both were named in 2024, about five-and-a-half and nine-and-a-half years out, respectively.

Beginning in 2019, the IOC revamped its Olympic selection system. Instead of an open vote among its membership, they moved toward a ‘preferred bidder’ where bids were advanced based on an evaluation of their readiness to host and meet the IOC requirements, with the final city emerging from a targeted process of increasing depth-of-plan rather than a vote.

That system declared the French Alps as the 2030 host, Brisbane as the 2032 host, and Salt Lake City as the 2034 host.

While the system was designed to create a less expensive bidding process and root out corruption in the voting system, it has been criticized for lack of transparency and lack of involvement by the IOC membership, with staff essentially making the decision.

Kyodo lays out a three-phase selection process for the next Summer Games in 2036:

An initial “continuous dialogue” phase will narrow the field of interested cities in the first quarter of 2027. A new “strategic dialogue” phase will see bidders submit detailed plans, provide financial guarantees, and give presentations to the IOC session in the fourth quarter of 2028. A “targeted dialogue” phase that focuses the discussion on “preferred hosts,” as instructed by the IOC executive board.

The host city is expected to be formally elected at the IOC session in mid-2029.

Prior to 2019, a rating system followed by a multi-round voting system narrowed the field of candidates usually to a head-to-head final vote.

Kyodo also says that the IOC is considering placing limits on the number of new sports that organizing committees can add to their hosted Olympic Games, with four additional disciplines for the Summer Olympics and two for the Winter Olympics. This is expected to come into effect for 2032, where new IOC President Kirsty Coventry has already hinted at a reduced program.

The Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games will include five additions: baseball/softball, cricket, flag football, lacrosse, and squash.

Cities/Countries that have expressed interest in hosting

The current leading bidders are from non-traditional Olympic hosts as the IOC seems eager to expand its boundaries. Note that Coventry is from Africa, which has never hosted the Olympic Games.

    Confirmed/Anticipated Bids:

Ahmedabad, India South Africa (Cape Town, Durban, Johannesburg) Doha, Qatar Istanbul, Turkey Santiago, Chile

    Possible Bids:

The New Capital, Egypt Seoul, South Korea Riyadh, Saudi Arabia China (Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macau) Budapest, Hungary Italy (various cities) Copenhagen, Denmark Germany (various cities) Toronto, Canada
