For the past 20 years, Pope Farms Produce and Garden Center has provided the Greeley community with fresh produce from the Pope Farm in Wiggins and other Colorado vendors and farms.
Susan Pope, owner, prides herself on selling all things Colorado at her store at 6501 W. 28th St., Greeley. She did start selling chiles from Hatch, New Mexico, but she said Pueblo chiles are on the way, too.
From Palisade peaches to Rocky Ford melons, Pope Farms also offers beets, bell peppers, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, cantaloupe, carrots, cauliflower, celery, cherries and a host of other fresh goods.
“I think that’s my niche,” she said. “I’m getting everything local.”
For the past 20 years, Pope Farms Produce and Garden Center, 6501 W. 28th St., Greeley, has provided the community with fresh produce like watermelons, onions, corn, peppers and other items. (Zant Reyez/Staff Reporter)The garden center will soon have pumpkins available, and then Christmas trees. The center also offers local flowers.
Soon, Pope plans to bring in pickles, squash, sweet corn and a few other items from the farm in Wiggins.
Before she opened her Greeley store, Pope and her family sold produce as vendors at 20 farmers markets every week, she said. Once her children grew up and went to college, she lacked help. So instead of going to as many farmers markets as possible, she opened up Pope Farms Produce.
Pope said she has witnessed the surrounding area around her store go from fields and dirt 20 years ago, to businesses, housing and traffic.
Even though traffic could mean customers for her, she still isn’t a fan of the consistent traffic the area and the city now have.
Still, Pope loves seeing her customers, from the fresh ones to longtime, loyal ones. She’s grateful for the years she has served them.
