On Monday, the Protect College Sports Act passed the senate with a 77-22 vote. Now that it has passed the first step, what comes next for the bill?
Once a bill passes the Senate, it moves onto the House of Representatives. There, it will go through the same process it went through in the Senate with debates among the 435-member House of Representatives. The bill will likely see more adjustments in the House before it is brought to a vote.
The bill will only need a simple majority in the House to pass, unlike in the Senate, where bills need 60 votes.
The House of Representatives adjourned early, and canceled the final days of their legislation. Speaker Mike Johnson sent lawmakers home early, and now the House will not be back in session before the midterm elections in November.
One of the bill’s author, Senator Ted Cruz said that he believed the House will return before elections, saying, “The House can pass this in one day.”
If the House does not return before elections, there will be another five week period from November 9-December 17 where the bill can be voted on, but it is difficult to predict what will happen during that period, especially as Democrats are hoping to take control of the House during the midterms and, if they do, they might be unwilling to vote for any legislation until the new legislators take their role in January.
If the bill passes a simple majority vote in the House, it will move onto the President, where he will sign it into law.
