Tensions boiled over between Tyrone Mings and Mason Greenwood in a pre-season friendly on Saturday.
Aston Villa travelled to Marseille for their penultimate summer test ahead of the new Premier League season next weekend.
They were beaten 3-1 by the Ligue 1 side at their Stade Velodrome.
During the match, Greenwood fouled Villans midfielder Amadou Onana, who reacted angrily and squared up to him.
He was given a slight push before his Villa teammate Mings stepped in and shoved the Marseille forward, a former target for Al Nassr.
Mings, who was an unused substitute when Greenwood made his one and only England appearance in September 2020 against Iceland, then grabbed his shirt and swung him around before players from both sides looked to diffuse the situation.
Greenwood’s shirt was ripped by the end of the scuffle, which left him needing a new one for the rest of the match.
It was Greenwood who scored the opener for Marseille before John McGinn, who has been linked with Everton and Newcastle, equalised for Villa.
Former Arsenal and Chelsea striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang came off the bench and netted two second-half goals to secure the French side the victory.
At full-time, respective Marseille bosses Roberto De Zerbi and Unai Emery were seen in a heated conversation.
However, it remains unclear as to why they clashed on the touchline.
Villa play their final pre-season friendly on Sunday when they travel to Spain to face Villarreal.

Villa announced the signing of striker Evann Guessand from Nice for around £30.5million on Friday.
The 24-year-old, who scored 12 goals in Ligue 1 last season, adds more depth for Emery’s side.
They add another attacking option in Nicolas Jackson this summer.

Villa also signed defender Yasin Ozcan from Kasimpasa S.K., but he will spend the upcoming season on loan at R.S.C. Anderlecht.
