Chris Woakes is willing to make another huge sacrifice for England to stand a chance of being involved in The Ashes.
The England star suffered a dislocated shoulder during the fifth Test against India at The Oval and has revealed he might not have surgery to ensure he’s fit to head Down Under.
The 36-year-old didn’t bowl for the remainder of the Test, but he did come out to bat in the second innings.
With England chasing a record score at The Oval, they found themselves nine wickets down, needing less than 20 runs to win.
Woakes came out to bat one handed with his arm in a sling, but he didn’t have to face a ball as Gus Atkinson kept him off strike.
However, he did have to run to ensure he kept Atkinson on strike at the end of every over before Mohammed Siraj bowled the Surrey star to win the Test and ensure the series ended 2-2.
England needed less then ten runs to win when it happened, and Woakes left the field in extreme pain.
Usually, after a dislocated shoulder, the solution is for the person to have surgery, but the recovery time for that is 3-4 months.
As a result, Woakes is willing to find an alternative to be fit for The Ashes.
Woakes put everything on the line for his countryGettyIn an interview with the BBC, Woakes discussed his options.
He said: “I’m waiting to see what the extent of the damage is but I think the options will be to have surgery or to go down a rehab route and try and get it as strong as possible.
“I suppose naturally with that there will be a chance of a reoccurrence, but I suppose that could be a risk that you’re just willing to take sort of thing.
“From what I’ve heard from physios and specialists is that the rehab of a surgery option would be closer to four months or three to four months. That’s obviously touching on the Ashes and Australia, so it makes it tricky.
“From a rehab point of view you can probably get it get it strong again within eight weeks. So that could be an option, but again obviously still waiting to get the full report on it.”
Woakes now has an awkward decision to makeGettyWill Woakes make it?
The first Test of The Ashes gets going in Perth on November 21.
This means if Woakes is to undergo surgery this month, he would be facing a race against time to make it on the plane to Australia.
England might need him as well, with fitness concerns over several players.
Jofra Archer played in two of the Tests after being out from playing red-ball cricket for four years, so there are doubts over his ability to play a full series.
Mark Wood also missed every game against India, so it is possible Woakes will need to battle through the pain barrier once more.
If Woakes decides not to have surgery, it would be a huge decision, especially after he thought his career was over when the injury first happened.
Speaking to The Guardian about it, he said: “The outfield was wet from the rain, almost greasy, and my hand slipped as I landed and my full body weight went through my shoulder. I heard a pop and knew I was in trouble.
“The pain came on pretty quickly and my arm was just hanging there. It was grim and my thoughts were racing. ‘Is it game over? Is it career done?’ It was a horrible place to be. We got it into a makeshift sling with my jumper and got off the field.
“It is a horrible feeling, your shoulder not where it should be and worrying it might never get back in. It felt like three hours but the medical staff were amazing.”
