Rehabbing Chicago Cubs righty Javier Assad had another successful start at Triple-A Iowa, throwing 58 pitches across 4.1 solid innings. He averaged 93 mph on his sinker, 88 mph on his cutter, and 83 mph on his slider, all where you’d want them to be.

Javier Assad’s Eventual Return to the Cubs
I still won’t prognosticate on his return timeline. When you get close to returning once from an oblique injury and then have a setback that puts you all the way back at the beginning of the process, that means I wait until you’re actually back on the mound with the big league team. Hopefully for Assad it’s after just one more rehab outing at most.
Once he is back, though, Javier Assad could offer a big boost. He’s never not been effective in the big leagues (3.40 ERA over 294.0 IP), both as a starter and a multi-inning reliever. Whatever role he fills for the Cubs, they can certainly use the innings, especially after their one starting/swing-man Trade Deadline acquisition, Mike Soroka, immediately got hurt.
Even if Javier Assad doesn’t jump right back into the rotation, knowing that he’s available and at full strength – without much wear on his arm this season, either – is a boost. The Cubs could play around with extra rest days, the timing of starts for match-up purposes, or otherwise tweak the way the innings are spread around, knowing that Assad can join the mix as necessary.
