Darnell Wright Left Thursday’s Practice Early With Possible Injury

Just when I was feeling good about the injury front after tight end Cole Kmet’s return to the practice field, some unsettling news regarding Chicago Bears starting right tackle Darnell Wright surfaces.

The Tribune’s Brad Biggs reports from Bears camp at Halas Hall:

#Bears RT Darnell Wright just left practice early. Came up awkward in the final period.

Ugh. This stinks. Not only does it appear that one of the Chicago Bears’ starting offensive linemen suffered an injury, but Biggs also reports (via Twitter/X) that it happened during the final stretch of Thursday’s practice period. That is a bummer. Hopefully, this is a minor issue and Wright will be back on the practice field without missing much time.

We’re on Darnell Wright injury watch

There isn’t much to go off of regarding a potential Darnell Wright injury, so I won’t do a deep dive at this time. Instead, I will wait for more reporting and some possible notes from coaches who might speak at Halas Hall later today. In the meantime, we can use this moment to discuss the Bears’ fallback plans if Wright is unavailable for any amount of time.

The biggest thing to know right now is that Kiran Amegadjie was listed as the second-string right tackle behind Darnell Wright on the depth chart. Amegadjie was a Day 2 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft and appeared to be in a three-way competition for the left tackle position with incumbent starter Braxton Jones and rookie Ozzie Trapilo. But when I saw Amegadjie listed behind Wright on the depth chart, I assumed that the battle to start at left tackle had been whittled down to two combatants. If that is the case, then I imagine Amegadjie is in a prime position to take any practice reps that would open up if Wright is unavailable.

It is also worth noting that 2024 Hard Knocks fan favorite Theo Benedet is listed behind Amegadjie on the right tackle depth chart. And it is worth pointing out that reserve linemen Ryan Bates and rookie Day 3 pick Luke Newman also have tackle experience, albeit at different levels in their careers.

I wonder if the Bears would consider playing Ozzy Trapilo at right tackle if Darnell Wright were to miss an extended period. Don’t get me wrong. I want to see if Trapilo can play his way into the starting lineup at left tackle. But if a worst-case scenario played out and Wright were to be sidelined for a while, I feel as if starting Braxton Jones at left tackle and Ozzy Trapilo on the right side would be the Bears’ best tackle pairing. This could be worth diving into later once more information is known about Wright’s health. Stay tuned.
