Dillian Whyte’s trainer makes stunning admission ahead of Moses Itauma fight

Dillian Whyte’s trainer, Buddy McGirt, claims he has never watched Moses Itauma box before.

This stunning admission comes two weeks before his fighter is set to square off against Itauma on August 16 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

McGirt has worked with several world champions, including Sergey Kovalev, Arturo Gatti and Hasim Rahman during his glittering career.

Yet he rarely watches tape in the lead-up to fight night, and that isn’t about to change ahead of Whyte’s make-or-break bout.

“I’m gonna be 1000% honest with you, I’ve never seen Moses fight, so I really don’t know what he’s ready for,” said McGirt.

“He’s got to bring it all. I said to Dill ‘Listen, let’s be realistic here, what can this kid do that you haven’t already seen?

“But can that kid ask the same question? Can Dillian do something that this kid has never seen before?”

McGirt’s words may come back to haunt him.

20-year-old Itauma has torn through his first 12 opponents with a degree of precocious ferocity that hasn’t been seen since a teenage Mike Tyson flattened 16 foes in his freshman year as a professional 40 years ago.

So strong is the belief in his ability that the Chatham southpaw opens up as a heavy favourite over Whyte, despite having never boxed anyone near his level.

At present, his career-best win so far came over Demsey McKean, who came unstuck at world level when he was stopped by Filip Hrgovic for the IBF interim title last December.

Whyte, a seasoned veteran and former world title challenger with wins over the likes of Alexander Povetkin, Joseph Parker and Derek Chisora, will act as an effective yardstick to see just how good Itauma really is.

“We’re training hard like it is a championship fight, but we aren’t training like we are fighting Clubber Lang or anybody,” McGirt added.

“Moses is a good young prospect, but we’re working every day like we’re fighting for the title, whether it is against this kid or anybody else.”

McGirt took Whyte under his wing in 2022 following his knockout loss to Tyson Fury at Wembley Stadium.

Together, they have won three fights on the bounce over Jermaine Franklin, Christian Hammer, and Ebenezer Tetteh.

Whyte’s career has stagnated significantly over the last few years, but a win over Itauma would put him right back up there with the upper echelons of the division.

At present, Itauma is ranked No.1 by the WBO and would be next in line to fight Joseph Parker for the red and gold strap if Oleksandr Usyk chooses to vacate the belt rather than face his mandatory, as many are anticipating.
