Chicago’s cycling community on Sunday honored a teenage bicyclist who was struck and killed by a car in the Loop three months ago and raised awareness for bike safety.
Just before 5 a.m. on May 26, 18-year-old Yader Castaneda was hit and killed while riding a Divvy bike at Michigan Avenue and Randolph Street.
“He was the funniest person I knew,” one of the vigil attendees said. “He would always put a smile on my face no matter what. I was never sad around him. He brightened up every room he was in. He always made everyone laugh.”
Family, friends and the bicycling community honored Castaneda with a ghost bike memorial at the intersection where he lost his life.
Christina Whitehouse, with Bike Lane Uprising, said this is not the first time they have hosted a memorial in the area.
In less than four years, this is the third ghost bike we have personally installed, and it is the epicenter of Chicago’s tourism,” she said. “We are just feet from Lollapalooza. If you look around the sidewalks are packed with pedestrians.”
“We need to prioritize people and safety versus getting vehicles through as fast as humanly possible,” she stated.
In this case, Chicago police said the driver had a green light when the collision happened, but they were still ticketed for failing to yield.
“Biking around Chicago, the state, you name it, is increasing and drivers need to understand and be mindful of pedestrians and bicyclists,” she stated.
