West Greeley project is bold and needed
As VP of my HOA and an active member of my neighborhood in West Greeley, I make a point to stay informed about development and planning in our city. That’s why I attended a community open house on the West Greeley entertainment district and larger project several weeks ago. What I saw was indeed impressive, and I’m left wondering where all the hate for this project is coming from.
The planning process was transparent, thoughtful, and open to community feedback. I sincerely thank the mayor and City Council for their commitment to public input and for keeping residents informed throughout the public process.
This project has the potential to be a game changer — not just for West Greeley, but for the entire city. It’s bold. It’s needed. And it’s the kind of opportunity Greeley should be seizing if we want to grow into the city we know we can be.
As the grandfather of a youth hockey player, I’ve seen firsthand the impact that strong community amenities can have. I’m not just talking about our kids either — this is about local pride and economic vitality. Greeley deserves that kind of energy and success.
Thank you again to our city leaders for believing in Greeley’s potential. I do too.
Earl Miller, Greeley
Now that it’s gone
“You don’t know what you’ve got till it’s gone.” — Joni Mitchell, 1970
How appropriate those words seem today. That line hit home when Donald Trump came along. Now I truly understand what we had and what we’ve lost.
The United States Constitution outlines three co-equal branches of government: the legislative, which makes laws; the executive, which enforces them; and the judicial, which interprets them. Today, we have just one branch: Trump. He has commandeered Congress and the Supreme Court to serve his will, speaking and acting with little consequence. Loyalty has eclipsed expertise.
Gone is any semblance of humanitarianism. Gone are meaningful friendships and alliances, especially with our European partners. Gone are agencies designed to help real people. Gone is American leadership in science, public health, environmental protection, and stewardship of public lands.
In their place, we now have imprisonment of immigrants, termination of grants to health services, elevation of pseudoscience over evidence, license to pollute, and inexperienced, but loyal individuals in critical roles.
Trump governs through fear. He attacks, belittles, and sues those who oppose him. Republican lawmakers who dare speak out are “primaried” out of office. Businesses and universities with DEI programs find themselves in his crosshairs. Immigrants — whether documented or not — become targets of ICE.
Can this country ever heal from the damage inflicted during this era? I don’t know. But I fear that history will mark this as a time when America shifted from democracy to autocracy.
Joni Mitchell sang: “They paved paradise and put up a parking lot.” But now it feels more like: “They pave the forest and put up an oil well.”
