The Blackhawks announced a two-year deal with Patrick Kane on Thursday morning that carries an $8M AAV.
“Day in and day out for 16 seasons, Patrick captivated the city of Chicago with his dazzling skill, creating some of the most memorable moments in Blackhawks history as he helped bring our storied franchise back to the pinnacle of our sport,” Blackhawks general manager Kyle Davidson said. “He’s shown on countless occasions that he knows what it takes to win at the highest levels, and we couldn’t be prouder for Patrick to once again call the United Center home and continue to shine in Chicago’s brightest lights.”
Kane, arguably the greatest American-born player in the history of the NHL (and, arguably, the greatest offensive player in the history of the Chicago Blackhawks) is coming back to where it all began.
Oh, and at some point, Kane could skate with the only other player in the 101-year history of the Chicago Blackhawks to be a No. 1 overall pick, Connor Bedard.
I’ve voiced my thoughts and some concerns about how and where Kane will fit into a Blackhawks lineup that seemingly has too many forwards already, especially when Bedard returns from his shoulder injury. Jeff Blashill and the rest of the Blackhawks coaches can now figure that out. Because it’s happening.

Here were some of those concerns, just for posterity.
Take the name off the back of the jersey for a moment. Here’s the player we are talking about the Blackhawks adding now:
– Turns 38 in November– Last season: one (1) burst of at least 22 mph, 61st percentile in 20-22 mph speed bursts– Last three seasons: 189 games played, 57 goals (16 PPG), 163 points, 17:59 ATOI– Last three seasons (5-on-5): 47.50 scoring chances for pct., 48.61 shot attempts for pct.– 0 playoff appearances
If we remove the name Patrick Kane from the equation, this doesn’t feel like the resume of a player the Chicago Blackhawks would — should — be pursuing on the open market. The resume just doesn’t fit the profile of a player that makes a lot of sense as a short-term rental for a team trying to make a push toward the playoff conversation.
But we can’t remove the name Patrick Kane from this conversation, even if we should. He’s an icon in Chicago. He scored the most important goal in Blackhawks history.
There are lineup concerns if Kane came back that need to be discussed as well. If he is a top-six right wing for the Blackhawks, who moves down? What does that do to the overall lineup construction — both before Bedard returns and after?
Kane is still dangerous on the power play, even if he’s only scored 16 power play goals over his past three seasons combined. But the Blackhawks haven’t seen a top PP unit with Bedard, Anton Frondell and Roman Kantserov on the ice together. If the Hawks brought Kane back, good luck telling anyone he shouldn’t be on that top unit. So… whose spot does he take?
We will, of course, go over this in greater detail throughout the days and weeks ahead.
