Angels let trade deadline pass quietly

On the fringe of the postseason race, the Angels got through the trade deadline without making any significant moves that helped either the present or the future, essentially standing pat.

The only move the Angels made on Thursday was to pick up utility infielder Oswaldo Peraza from the New York Yankees in exchange for an 18-year-old minor leaguer. A day earlier, the Angels picked up veteran relievers Luis Garcia and Andrew Chafin.

The Angels neither sold any of their major leaguers – most notably closer Kenley Jansen or outfielder Taylor Ward – nor shipped away any of their top prospects to bolster the current roster.

General Manager Perry Minasian is expected to speak to the media on Thursday afternoon.

The Angels are 53-56, four games back in the race for the third American League wild card spot. FanGraphs gives them about a 3% chance of making the playoffs.

Peraza, 25, was once a top 100 prospect, but he’s struggled in his brief big league time with the Yankees.

Peraza has hit .190 with a .548 OPS in 145 major league games. A right-handed hitter, Peraza can play second base, third base and shortstop.

Peraza gives the Angels some more infield depth, with both Yoan Moncada and Luis Rengifo set to be free agents at the end of the season. Peraza remains under control for four seasons beyond 2025.

The Angels sent the Yankees 18-year-old outfielder Wilberson De Peña, who was not listed among their top 30 prospects, according to Baseball America. De Peña has hit .218 in 57 games over the past two years in the Dominican Summer League.

The Angels also sent the Yankees international bonus pool space.

The Angels designated veteran infielder Kevin Newman for assignment to make room for Peraza.

More to come on this story.
