WASHINGTON COMMANDERS guard Nate Herbig has announced his sudden retirement at age 27.
Head coach Dan Quinn revealed yesterday that the offensive lineman has been placed on the Commanders’ reserve/retired list.
Herbig retires without playing a game for the Commanders, having only joined the team this off-season.
The NFL giants will have to look elsewhere to strengthen their protection for superstar quarterback Jayden Daniels.
No reason behind the decision has officially been given.
Herbig has not played in the NFL since the 2023 season after suffering a torn rotator cuff last August.
The Hawaiian played three seasons of college football for the Stanford Cardinal from 2016-2018.
He was included in the All-Pacific Coast First Team in 2017 and the Second Team in 2018.
He forewent his last year of college to declare for the 2019 draft, but went undrafted after a lacklustre combine performance.
The 6ft 4in, 334lb Herbig began his NFL career when he was picked up as an undrafted free agent by the Philadelphia Eagles in April 2019.
He would make his NFL debut in December of that year against Washington.
He would spend almost three years in Philadelphia before being waived in 2022.
The New York Jets would pick him up just days later, where he would play and start 11 games that season.
He was signed by the Pittsburgh Steelers on a two-year deal in March of 2023.
He would be joined at the Steelers a few months later by his little brother Nick Herbig, when the team picked him up in the fourth round of the 2023 draft.
This would be the older Herbig’s only fully healthy season, making 17 appearances.

The Steelers announced he had a torn rotator cuff in August 2024, and he would not feature for them in the upcoming season.
Despite not playing since the 2023 campaign, he accepted a one-year contract with the Commanders in March as they sought more experience for their offensive line.
The sudden announcement of his retirement will have taken the team by surprise, as they now find themselves shorthanded with the season quickly approaching.
He was not their only experienced acquisition, with the team signing the NFL’s most prolific journeyman, Josh Johnson, to add depth to the quarterback position.
They also added two-time Super Bowl champ Von Miller to the O-line after his release from the Buffalo Bills earlier this year.
The Commanders kick off their season on September 7th as they host the New York Giants.
